TOPIC: STUPIDITY OF IDOLATRY

KEY VERSE:
"Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver and there is no breath at all in the midst of it." - (Habakkuk 2:19).

READ: Habakkuk 2:13-20 (KJV)
13. Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?

14. For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

15. Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

16. Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy fo****in be uncovered: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

17. For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

18. What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

19. Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

20. But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

MESSAGE:
In many ancient mythologies, gods were often depicted as having human-like qualities, including the need for rest or sleep at night. Some were made of wood and stones that had to be carried from place to place. Tragically, some people, created in God's own image, still worshipped these idols.

Prophet Habakkuk had much to lament about in the ungodly lifestyle of his fellow Israelites and their Babylonian overlords. Though one nation was in servitude to the other, both were in bo***ge to Satan, as shown by their sinful practices. Two of such practices were drunkenness and idolatry, which betrayed ignorance or rejection of God's standard of holiness. The Babylonians were ignorant of the true God, just as the Athenians, who set up altars to various gods and provided for the Unknown God in Paul's day.

Each individual should take responsibility for his or her misdeeds, without making excuses. Hence, God condemned worship of idols, as well as both the giver and the taker of alcoholic drinks. Drinking intoxicated beverages is a sinful and dangerous form of recreation because it interferes with rational decision-making and causes damage to individual lives, homes and property.

This is why the police will arrest anyone driving under the influence. Such a person is considered careless and reckless and his action or failure to act, could lead to road traffic accidents, often causing death and injuries. If secular authorities are so concerned about the effect of intoxicants on vehicle drivers and operators of machinery, how much more is God concerned about people taking substances that could damage their organs, blur their vision, deaden their conscience and make them prone to temptation.

We should be sober and vigilant. We need also to watch against modern idolatry. Anything we value above God, becomes an idol. An idol can be ourselves, when we place our interests above that of God. Let us start on a new note today, to reject everything idolatrous. We don't have to indulge in alcohol drinking, simply because it is legal in our area. God's command deserves more respect than the indulgence of our worldly systems.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Worship of man-made objects is not just an affront to God, but the height of human folly.

TOPIC: RISE ABOVE YOUR WEAKNESS

KEY VERSE:
"For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling." - (1 Corinthians 2:2,3).

READ: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (KJV)
1. And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

4. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

MESSAGE:
Failure to recognise personal, vocal excesses and rise above them can lead to failure or underperformance. French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte failed to consider his limitations when he invaded Russia in 1812. His weakness in logistics and strategic planning led to a series of costly mistakes. He underestimated the Russian winter, overextended his supply lines and failed to adapt to changing circumstances. The result was that the invasion ended in disaster, with the loss of thousands of soldiers.

As Apostle Paul approached the Corinthian brethren, he was aware of his weaknesses. He realised his emotional inabilities, fears and anxieties, mainly because of the hostility of the environment. He knew that relying on his gift of eloquence or carnal wisdom would not give him the needed breakthrough into the hearts of the sophisticated Corinthians. Moreover, he wanted, more than anything else, that the faith of the believers should rest on God's power and not on human props. And this he could not achieve by relying on his human strength and gifts. Therefore, he had to draw strength from the Lord. He believed that the power of a transforming gospel lies in its divine origin and not in the speaker's abilities.

Unlike Paul, many believers today focus so much on their perceived abilities; they do not realise their limitations. When we fail to realise that we are limited in some ways, we become presumptuous. This subtle manifestation of pride often leads to bitter falls and sometimes irreparable losses. On the other hand, dwelling on our weaknesses and letting them hinder us is not good either. Whether they are emotional or intellectual shortcomings, arising from our racial or family background, economic or financial constraints, social class, physical challenges or cultural challenges or even intense opposition and persecution, we must not allow any of these to stop us from fulfilling the assignment or call the Lord has given to us. Whatever weaknesses we may have, we can and should rise above them.

Realising we are limited in ourselves is fine. It helps us to depend on God's grace alone to accomplish the task He has given us. We stay humble, knowing that we have nothing within ourselves to boast about. We should draw strength from Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. In Christ alone we find all sufficiency.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No task is a match to us when tackled with strength from the Lord.

TOPIC: SPIRITUAL WISDOM

KEY VERSE:
"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." - (1 Corinthians 2:14).

READ: 1 Corinthians 2:11-15 (KJV)
11. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

MESSAGE:
Scholars, philosophers and theologians have debated the importance of intellectual knowledge and spiritual discernment in human affairs for centuries. The Enlightenment philosophers, notably Jean Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire, expressed faith in human reason to improve society but rejected religion and the truth of revelation. St. Thomas Aquinas, contended that reason and revelation are not mutually exclusive, only that the truth of revelation is superior.

In our text, Apostle Paul contrasted the 'wisdom of man' with the 'wisdom of God'. The central argument is that man's wisdom is of little importance in preaching the gospel because the Word is spiritually discerned, and the converts are established in the faith because of the power behind the preaching. Hence, Paul told the Corinthian church that his message was not based on philosophy and oratory but in the demonstration of the Spirit and power.

Many believe that all they need to start an assembly is a good education backed by smooth talk and organisational ability. This is why more motivational speakers are behind the pulpit than able ministers of the New Testament. Similarly, some people say they do not need to sit under any anointed servant of God, since they are educated or intelligent enough to read the Bible. But the Bible cannot be read as a newspaper or history book because its words are 'Spirit and life.'

The essence of the Word can only be discerned spiritually. Without divine illumination or revelation, many of the injunctions and commandments in the Bible will appear unrealistic to the intellectual mind. Thankfully, spiritual enlightenment is one of the gifts of the Spirit God has made available for the perfection of the Church.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Profitable Bible reading requires prayerful divine illumination.

KEY VERSE:
"Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven." - (Proverbs 23:5).

READ: Proverbs 23:5-6 (KJV)
5. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6. Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

MESSAGE:
Amazing stories of people who went from riches to rags abound in history. Elke Batista was once Brazil's richest man. He was worth $30 billion before his business empire collapsed due to bad investments and corruption charges. In addition to losing his fortune, he faced prison time. Such stories remind us that earthly wealth is temporal, and we should not set our hearts on it.

In our text, Solomon advises caution and self-control when invited to feast or dine with the rich because you may not know the true intention behind the sumptuous meal. And for those whom the dainty food might tempt to desire riches at all costs, he admonishes them to exercise godly wisdom since the wealth could disappear suddenly.

As Solomon observes, the change of fortune could result from sudden calamity, as was the case of Job. The poverty could be caused by spending habits, as illustrated by the prodigal son. Sudden death could prevent the rich from enjoying the wealth they have laboured to acquire. In any case, the pleasure of material goods cannot go beyond this world. This is why Christ warns us not to labour for the meat that perisheth but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life.

Sadly, many people are enticed by the ostentatious lifestyle and affluence often displayed by wealthy individuals. People cut corners and resort to financial crimes to become rich. That is one reason there is a global upsurge in fraud and kidnapping for ransom, which is a capital offence. Although there is nothing wrong with working honestly to be comfortable in life, we must not make the accumulation of earthly possessions our goal. Truly, the love of money is the root of all evils. As we trust God for the supply of our daily bread, we should heed the warning of Christ that a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his riches.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Money has wings, it can fly away suddenly.

READ: Galatians 4:14-18 (KJV)
14. And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15. Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

16. Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17. They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

18. But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

MESSAGE:
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932, was once asked why he was not troubled, attending a small church where the preacher was a most ordinary man with no originality as a thinker. Dr. Holmes gave this fine reply: "I go because I have a little plant called Reverence, and I must need water it once a week or it would die."

Apostle Paul corrected the Galatian church for the dissipation of the once flourishing virtue amongst them. They once loved and cherished him, but they no longer manifested the same affection towards him for whatever reason(s). The infiltration of false teachers affected them. They no longer loved and appreciated their mentor and spiritual father. Evil communication had corrupted their good manners. Yet they failed to realise that when we honour God's servants, we honour God. Conversely, dishonouring God's anointed implies dishonour for God.

Ministers of God are His representatives among men, chosen and anointed as shepherds accountable to Him. God anoints them for His unique service, and we are not allowed to dishonour them. David was smitten in the heart when he cut off the fringe of King Saul's skirt. He regretted what he did because Saul was God's anointed. Persecutions and difficulties are no excuses for disobedience. You can always commit your ways to God, the righteous Judge, for mediation and intervention. When believers criticise, speak carelessly, murmur against, or falsely accuse their leaders, they dishonour God's anointed, and He would not be pleased with them. It is even more delicate when we neglect to obey the word of God they teach us.

On the other hand, believers must be wary of false teachers and prophets who creep into fellowship to corrupt gatherings of saints with pernicious words. Their influence can be very damaging. They beguile unstable souls and make merchandise of the innocent and the gullible. We are not to obey, or follow preachers, who show wrong examples, and aim to turn us away from God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is always profitable to give honour to whom honour is due.

READ: Luke 22:31-34 (KJV)
31. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

32. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

33. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

34. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the c**k shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

MESSAGE:
In warfare, a common strategy is to capture or kill key leaders on the enemy's side to gain tactical advantage. The killing of Osama bin Laden was a pivotal moment in modern history, marking the end of the decade-long chase for the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. It also crippled and weakened the influence of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group.

This kind of strategy also applies in spiritual warfare. The devil targets those he considers key leaders and influential disciples of Christ. Recognising Peter's significant position and relevance in God's plan for the Church, he wanted to destroy Peter's faith and abort God's plan for him. However, Jesus knew Satan's plot; thus, He forewarned Peter, reassuring him of His prayers. Rather than heed Christ's warning, Peter began to boast of his love and loyalty to Christ.

Satan's plot against Peter applies to all believers. He constantly desires to take us down. The devil considers every believer a potential threat to him and his kingdom. Therefore, he tries to get the believer out of favour with God and render him weak and useless such that he can no longer pose a threat to him. Satan uses fierce and bitter opposition or subtle temptations to allure the unsuspecting Christian. But we have the comforting assurance that Jesus is praying for us.

However, Christ's intercession for us does not absolve us of the responsibility of staying on guard always. While we are not to become scared of the devil, we cannot afford to be carefree, careless, presumptuous, or self-confident. We must constantly watch and pray. There is no spiritual level we can attain, or how close to God we can be, that will keep us out of the devil's temptations and plot. Satan does not give up on anyone at all. He does not mind waiting as long as it takes to hunt down a believer. We must, therefore, constantly watch and pray. Take to the counsel of Charlotte Elliott, the hymn writer. "Gird thy heavy armour on, Wear it ever night and day; ambushed lies the evil one; watch and pray." As long as we keep trusting in the Lord and abide in His words, we can be sure of victory over the devil no matter how long and hard he tries!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who keep their watch in prayer will overcome the devil's schemes.

READ: Jonah 3:6-10 (KJV)
6. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

8. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

9. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

10. And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

MESSAGE:
In his book, Timothy Jennings, a psychiatrist and Christian author, writes of the danger of unrecognised heart conditions: "Hypertension—high blood pressure—has been called the silent killer, but medical professionals didn't always realise this. In fact, some doctors argued that hypertension was a made-up disorder that didn't need to be treated at all". For instance, in 1931 Dr. John J. Hay, a British senior physician proclaimed: "The greatest danger to a man with high blood pressure lies in its discovery, because then some fool is certain to try and reduce it." Tragic results followed from this reckless statement which some experts now argue was taken out of context. Further medical studies later provided better answers that have facilitated the treatment of those conditions.

This applies to the way Jonah's fiery preaching of impending judgment upon sinful Nineveh triggered a change of heart after years of impudence and stonewalling. Nineveh was on God's agenda for severe judgment. That was the case, until the reluctant Prophet Jonah, came with his fiery message of doom. Although Jonah did not provide any panacea that could encourage hope in the Ninevites, nonetheless, they heeded the call of their king, who proclaimed a fast to plead for forgiveness. The response of the king was immediate and decisive: he ordered a national dry fast (no food or water) and charged everyone to "cry mightily to God." He understood that conviction must be followed by confession, prayer for pardon and the forsaking of past sins. His rhetorical question of whether God would pardon should be seen as a sinner's acknowledgement of the depth of his depravity and God's absolute prerogative to forgive sins. It was not the fasting that brought God's forgiveness and mercy, but the genuine repentance.

Living around the precipice of danger, while holding on to a wrong assumption, can be damnable. So also is the careless attitude of dismissing a serious situation without probing further. God expects the sinner to respond to the gospel message, rather than believing all is well because they do not feel any danger in the present. Very important too is the need for us to preach the word of salvation very clearly, so the world can be acquainted with the danger they face. The impact of the Word is the conviction of hearts as seen in the text. No conversion can take place without the proclaimed gospel, which brings conviction and godly sorrow for sins, confession and turning away from sin to the Saviour.

In our current dispensation of grace, sinners should not doubt God's willingness to pardon, if they come in the name of Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for mankind. Neither should they doubt God's readiness to judge sinners who refuse to heed His warnings.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A positive change of mind produces rewardable transformation.

27. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

28. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

29. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

30. Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

31. Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

32. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

MESSAGE:
It was around 1941 when N**i brutality was getting to its height that a Polish Franciscan Priest named Maximilian Kolbe became the symbol of sacrificial death for others during World War 2. The inspiring incident happened in the Auschwitz concentration camp, when he voluntarily took the place of a fellow prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was condemned to die. Kolbe offered his life so that Gajowniczek, a husband and father, could live. This monumental and inspiring act is now tagged: "The Sacrifice of Maximilian Kolbe (1941)".

Apart from the iconic sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Himself, this relatable story has inspired generations of believers and missionaries to consider nothing too precious to give up in order to rescue people from impending damnation. There have been countless number of missionaries that have paid the supreme price in South America, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Others faced the harshness of the Iron Curtain nations in the Communist era, and confronted other hostile communities in an attempt to share Christ's gospel of redemption.

Kolbe's act of selfless love and sacrifice no doubt mirrors the infinitely greater redemptive love of Christ that believers must model. Of course, the narratives in the New Testament and the actual historical event of His passion, agonising prayer at Gethsemane, betrayal by one of His close disciples, His kangaroo court trials, cruel treatment, mocking and eventual crucifixion, only affirm His sacrificial love for mankind.

It is said that when Jesus was nailed to the cross, our sin was also nailed there. He was punished so that we will be set free from condemnation. He died so that we can live. As prophetically revealed in the Scripture, Christ paid a high price for our salvation.

There are a few lessons we need to take away from this meditation. These include our obligation to reciprocate that sacrifice through our unconditional love for Christ and His sheep; our total submission to His perfect will; our commitment to take the gospel message to others, lest His suffering and death at Calvary be a waste in the lives of those who may perish without hearing and receiving the good news.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Christ paid the high price that makes salvation free to all sinners.

MESSAGE:
After World War 2, the Nuremberg trials took place to hold key leaders of N**i Germany accountable for their war crimes, including genocide. These trials sent a powerful message to the world: individuals and nations must answer for their horrific actions, much like the divine judgment described in the Scripture.

Amos delivers a sharp critique of the neighbouring nations of Tyre, Edom, and Ammon in this passage. Each of these nations, in their own way, violated God's laws and showed a blatant disregard for human life and dignity. Through Amos' prophecy, God made it clear that the nations were responsible for their actions, reminding us that our choices carry weighty consequences. Tyre, a prosperous and influential nation, was called out for breaking its covenant with Israel and for its involvement in human trafficking. Edom, a nation connected to Israel by family ties and covenant, faced condemnation for its violence, lack of compassion, and hostility towards its brother Jacob. Finally, the Ammonites were reprimanded for their brutality, killing defenceless women and children in their quest for land.

The looming threat of judgment against those nations serves as a stark reminder of God's intolerance for evil, no matter where it appears. God calls for repentance and righteousness from everyone, showing no favouritism. Whether one is an Israelite or not, God is the Creator of all and will ultimately be the Judge of all. The three nations discussed here, while not part of Israel, were still warned of impending judgment and urged to repent.

As we seriously ponder over these events today, we are reminded that we cannot ignore God's laws without facing the repercussions for our actions. We cannot treat others cruelly, hold onto unforgiveness, or engage in wickedness and expect to escape retribution. As Amos stated, when God speaks, we must listen; and when we fail to listen, we do so at our own peril.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God's justice transcends international frontiers.

READ: Matthew 22:23-33 (KJV)
23. The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

24. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

26. Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27. And last of all the woman died also.

28. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

31. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

33. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

MESSAGE:
One time Indian statesman, Mahatma Gandhi, once noted that, "An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it." Again, he said of his personality, "When I despair, I remember that all through history, the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it always."

For centuries, the Sadducees held tenaciously to the errors, which they used as slavish cords to bind the minds of the simple masses who could not read between the lines until Christ showed up as the embodiment of the truth. He put paid to their age-long false propagation against the resurrection of the dead.

Jesus affirmed that the Sadducees were in error because they lacked the truth of Scripture. They opined a life of marriage that is incongruent with the biblical truth on resurrection. But the Lord Jesus affirmed that "in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven." Christ's revelation astounded the people because of its depth and clarity.

Those who desire to discern the truth from error must learn to equip themselves with the infallible word of God. Be addicted to reading, studying, meditating and living on God's instructions. And peddlers of errors will never find a ready and willing stall in you to display their erroneous wares.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: He whose heart is filled with God's truth finds no room for falsehood.
