When your baby is born, a whole new chapter begins—not just for them, but for you too. Those first 12 weeks after birth are widely recognized as the 4th Trimester.

Your baby is learning how to be outside the womb, and you are learning how to navigate motherhood.

1. Your Baby Still Thinks They Are Part of You 🤰

Human babies are born incredibly dependent compared to other mammals. For the first 3 months, your newborn naturally expects a womblike environment: constant warmth, gentle motion, high-sensory touch, and immediate feeding.

Clinical research shows that prolonged skin-to-skin contact and babywearing trigger the release of oxytocin (the bonding hormone) in both of you. For your baby, this stabilizes body temperature, regulates blood sugar, reduces crying, and significantly lowers stress hormones.

You cannot "spoil" a newborn. Responding promptly to their cries builds a secure foundation, making them more confident and secure as they grow.

2. "Matrescence" is a Major Brain Shift 🧠⚡

Just like adolescence, the transition into motherhood (matrescence) involves a massive hormonal, psychological, and neurological overhaul. It is entirely normal to feel a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

3. Responsive Feeding Builds Your Supply 🥛

If you are breastfeeding, the 4th trimester is all about setting up the supply-and-demand chain. Babies have tiny tummies and digest human milk rapidly, which frequently leads to "cluster feeding" (feeding very often, especially in the evenings).

World Health Organization guidelines emphasize feeding on cue rather than adhering to any schedule. Feeding 8 to 12 times a day (or more during growth spurts) signals your body exactly how much milk your baby needs.

Our regular Monday meetings will be taking a bit of a pause or looking a bit different over the next couple of months.
This week we will be meeting on Monday morning for a gentle walk and possibly stop off for a coffee along the way. We will be meeting slightly earlier than our usual group, so it should be still cool enough for the little ones.
A great way to start your week off with some movement and chats with fellow parents.
