SEED SOVEREIGNTY UNDER THREAT

The EU is about to decide on new seed laws (PRM) and GMO deregulation (NGTs) — and the outcome could reshape the future of farming in Ireland.

These proposals risk:
• Restricting farmers’ right to save and exchange seeds
• Undermining seed diversity
• Expanding corporate control of our food system
• Opening the door to unlabelled GMOs

At Talamh Beo, we’re calling for urgent action.

It’s catching on! Community kitchens are a wonderful alternative to the current dominant model of school meal delivery.
The brilliant spoke yesterday at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth - representing the views of many organisations with long history of campaigning in this space - to say they every school meal should be nourishing, and should support the environment, local farms, and food education.
Community food providers can do just this. Instead of reheated processed food of low nutritional value being driven from one end of the country to the other, a network of community hubs could supply freshly cooked food to schools in their locality, sourced locally, supporting local jobs, and building connection and wealth in the community with this public investment (€320 million per year). A localised approach also provides easy opportunities to integrate food education by linking schools to their local farmers and food producers.
It’s a rare win-win-win-win!
But community providers will need to be properly resourced and we need to work to build capacity in the sector. We have a plan to do that work and to replicate and scale good models of community school food provision over the next few years.
School food is more than a meal. Every bite can nourish children, planet and communities - if we get it right.

Great new years article in The Irish Times by Sylvia Thompson on the Feeding Ourselves Local Food Symposium in Trinity College Dublin last October.

If you’re interested in the future of food, farming & health in Ireland, take a few minutes to read and join Talamh Beo to be part of the conversation.

As Fergal says in the article:
“It’s about giving people access to high-quality, nutritious food and allowing farmers to make a fair living.”
