For more than 85 years, Colleran’s Family Butchers has been the butcher of choice for Galwegians looking for the best of Irish meat and poultry.

Originally from Annakeen, Headford, John Enda Colleran came to Galway to serve as an apprentice at Costello’s Butchers in Eyre Square. After working with Costello’s and serving his time John and his wife, Bridget, decided to branch out and establish their own business at 18, Mainguard Street, Galway in 1935, where it continues to trade today.

It was a small butchers selling beef, poultry, and eggs. Setting up a business during the depression era in Ireland was no mean feat, however, tougher times lay ahead with the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and introduction of rationing. However, adversity reveals character and it was during those years that John laid the foundations of what the business has grown into today.
