Ireland's vegetable growing industry is in crisis. The race to the bottom sees older growers leave the industry and no young growers replacing them. This threatens local and national food security. If we want our food to remain local, then we need to make some changes.

Small choices can make a big difference.
From supporting local organic retailers and growers to making one simple organic swap in your weekly shop, there are lots of ways to support organic.
When you shop, remember to look for the EU Organic Leaf.

Come join us at the An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre as we explore the food we eat, growing it ourselves and eating it all year round in light of climate change and the biodiversity crisis.

Preserving our homegrown and locally sourced produce is one of the key elements of successfully growing your own and feeding yourself nutritiously year-round.

Capture the best of the season as you are guided through different preserving techniques, inspired by the organic produce from our garden and farm, the fruits from our orchard and the hedgerows surrounding our 70-acre organic farm.

This class is tailored to the season giving you an opportunity to jam, chutney, pickle and ferment a delicious selection of the items we produce here at An Tairseach. By the end of the day you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to preserve the produce from your own garden, local markets, orchards or hedgerows.

A delicious lunch will be served incorporating organic vegetables and produce from our organic farm.

Every now and then....I think I might as well talk to the dog.😉. At least she listens. I try to bring across my point to ecologists : the importance of certified organic herbaceous perennial pollinator plants native to Ireland for our ecosystem. Educated and qualified as a scientific ecologist 50 years ago, I feel obliged to contribute something to our ecosystem even at my age and being worn out. This year, no ecologist was interested in the thousands of certified organic herbaceous pollinator plants native to Ireland we were growing. It seemed like mission impossible. Only the grassroots, our private clients with responsibility, came to buy our plants. But this week suddenly there seems to be a tipping point: we got orders for 2 public projects, together for over 7000 plants. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen ecologists. At least growing our native plants wasn't in vain. We at Caherhurley are happy to make a contribution to a better ecosystem together, however small it might be. Ireland's insects need more herbaceous pollinator plants, not only native trees.

CAHERHURLEY NURSERY IS FULLY OPEN every day, including weekends and weekdays, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. We have over 50 years of experience in growing unusual varieties of plants. The varieties are all hardy. The Eircode of our nursery is V94K3E3. You're welcome.
