Prathama Ashtami is a special festival celebrated in Odisha to honor the eldest child in every family, symbolizing blessings, love, and the passing down of family responsibilities. It occurs on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in Margashira month according to the Odia calendar. On this day, mothers worship Goddess Shashti Devi praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of their firstborn child, who is lovingly called “Podhuan.” New clothes and sweets are traditionally gifted from the maternal uncle’s home as a token of affection and blessings. One of the culinary highlights is the preparation of Enduri Pitha, a steamed rice cake wrapped in turmeric leaves, made from freshly harvested rice, underscoring the connection between the festival and Odisha’s agrarian culture. This festival is rooted in the belief that the eldest child is the pillar of strength for the family and the torchbearer of traditions and responsibilities.
In this auspicious festival season, Natures Gold proudly supports the celebration of Prathama Ashtami, honoring Odisha’s rich tradition and the bounty of new rice harvests.
