How your moong and Urad Daal have changed in past 5 years?

When GoPlow started organic farming in 2018, harvesting moong/ urad/ masoor involved manually picking the mature pods (phali) over 2 days, requiring 3 laborers and 3 picking cycles, costing around Rs 7200 ( 400/ day/ labor). Both conventional and organic farmers were following this practice.

However, lately most conventional farmers in Haryana and Punjab region are using herbicides like Glyphosate and Paraquat, which quickly kill the plants and dry the pods within 12 hours. This allows the famer to use harvesters to collect the crops, saving about Rs 5000 per acre in labor costs.

But there is a problem!!! Glyphosate and Paraquat are highly toxic and carcinogenic, banned in many countries and parts of India like Kerala.

Moong, Masoor and urad daal are no longer safe food items and FSSAI has been repeatedly mentioning about traces of these toxic chemicals being much higher than prescribed Maximum Residue Limit in our dals.
