The founder of the idea that is known as 'City Market', Sardar Dayal Singh Ahuja, a visionary, philantropist and a social entrepreneur along with his highly educated sons, Sardar Gurinder Singh Ahuja and Sardar Jagminder Singh Ahuja envisaged the idea of a self service supermarket in the tier 1 industrial town of Faridabad way back in the year 1990. Coming from a manufacturing background into retail had its own difficulties. The challenge of developing a new infrastructure, design, product variety, a system and selling the idea of a self service supermarket to totally unexpected and skeptical customer base was taken up head on by the trio and through their hard work and determination was materialized thereafter with fulfilling results. Shopping carts were not available back in the 90s as today, so from mere photography the carts were fabricated by steel wires to spot welding and plating with the help of local small scale industries. As opposed to steel racks used for the display of our inventory today, wooden racks of similar design were built and used. The constraint of software and computer technology available back in the 90s led the joint MD of the company, Sardar Jagminder Singh Ahuja to develop an in house software using a very basic personal computer available at the time. We proudly use the software even today with Sardar Jagminder Singh Ahuja constantly re discovering it. A fully air conditioned ambience was provided, housing variety of products in grocery, household items, toiletries, cosmetics, kitchen utilities, dinnerware, crockery, glassware, thermoware, electrical, frozen foods, health foods etc. under one roof. Initially the customers were skeptical that such an extravagant store would be highly priced but once they shopped with us, they found an extremely comfortable environment with highest quality product at the best price available anywhere in the National Capital Region. Constantly providing our customers with attractive schemes and discounts we can say with utmost pride that the 3rd generation of our initial customer base are shoppers with us today and thousands of new shoppers are added everyday to our ever growing family.
