The clear majority of people are employed in the agriculture sector. A dependency on the agriculture sector, using traditional farming methods that contain high-priced pesticides, caused poverty to many households due to excessive cost of farming and low income. More than 80% farmers in India are small and marginal. An average of farmers belonging to this group earns less than what they invest in
the cultivation cycle every year. Combining this with the typical Indian household consumption of vegetables and fruits that are filled with contamination, which is a result of the heavy usage of pesticides within the present agriculture market. The use of pesticides increases the cost on the local farmer, causing high investment and low return. Farmers often lack knowledge about the alternative technique of farming which is less expensive or the organic farming techniques. Smallholder farmers are poverty-stricken and powerless to apply for the organic certification on their own. The market price for the non-certified organic vegetables doesn't vary significantly from the non-organically produced vegetables. The certified organic vegetable plantation is labor intensive and the price of organic vegetable is 50%-150% higher than the non-organically grown ones. Thus, organic farming not only increases the income of farmers but also contributes to the local employment. The Rural economy of India is dependent on agriculture as well as the possibility of human life on earth is directly dependent on safe and sustainable Organic Agriculture, that’s why we are working on such problems.
