BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU EAT OR DRINK.
A new 2025 study has revealed something many people never expected: taurine, the ingredient added to countless energy drinks, might actually feed leukemia cells.
Researchers from the Wilmot Cancer Institute discovered that leukemia cells don’t just tolerate taurine, they use it as fuel. The more taurine around them, the faster they grow. And when scientists blocked these cells from absorbing taurine? Their growth slowed down.
This doesn’t mean energy drinks cause cancer. But it does mean that for people battling leukemia, or those at higher risk, extra taurine from drinks and supplements could make the disease more aggressive.
It’s a powerful reminder that not everything marketed as “energy” is harmless. Sometimes, the smallest ingredients have the biggest effects.
