You Can Keep Capri. I’m Going to Capraia.
If I want an island break in Italy without the crowds, the polished glamour and the feeling that everyone is chasing the same photo, I would rather take the boat to Capraia. This small island in the Tuscan Archipelago feels wilder, quieter and far more relaxed than the places that usually dominate summer wish lists.
Capraia is the kind of place where the day naturally slows down. You arrive at the little harbor, walk past fishing boats and a few restaurants, stop for a coffee, and within minutes you are already in a different rhythm. The water is incredibly clear, the coastline is rugged and volcanic, and many of the island’s most beautiful corners are best reached by boat or on foot.
That is part of what makes it so special. Capraia is not about boutique shopping, beach clubs or a packed itinerary. It is about swimming in deep blue coves, taking a boat around the cliffs, eating simple seafood dinners, and spending long summer hours with very little pressure to do anything at all. There is only one real village, and above it rises the old fortress, adding even more character to a place that already feels beautifully removed from everyday life.
The island is also part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and you can feel that protected, untamed side of it everywhere. Hiking trails cut through Mediterranean scrub, views open out over the sea, and the whole landscape feels raw in the best possible way.
So no, Capraia does not give you Capri’s fame, luxury scene or headline status. What it gives you instead is peace, wild beauty, clear water and that rare feeling of having found an Italian island that still knows how to stay quiet.
