We warmly congratulate Dr. Daniel Mwendah M'Mailutha on his election as President of the World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) for the 2026–2028 term.

For the World Farmers Markets Coalition, this is a particularly meaningful moment. We have had the privilege of working with Daniel through Kenya National Farmers' Federation (KENAFF), one of our valued member organisations in Nairobi, Kenya. Throughout the years, we have witnessed his unwavering commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening their voice at local, regional, and global levels.

His election is an encouraging signal for small-scale farmers and farmer-led organisations around the world, whose contributions are essential to building more sustainable and resilient food systems.

Celebrating the International Year of the Woman Farmer ( )

Meet Doaa El Karawan Mousa Mohamed Mousa Gamil, a farmer and member of the Alexandria Farmers Market who has been dedicated to clean agriculture since 2020. Through natural farming methods, she produces healthy food without pesticides, relying instead on seaweed, amino acids, vermicompost, and traditional organic fertilizers.

Doaa’s work is rooted in ecological balance and a commitment to bringing back the authentic taste and quality of natural food while protecting both people and the environment.

Through the Alexandria Farmers Market, she connects directly with consumers, organizes educational workshops, and raises awareness about sustainable agriculture and healthy food systems.

This year, we honour women like Doaa: farmers and educators helping build safer, healthier, and more sustainable communities through agriculture.

The Future of Local Food Systems in Kenya

Last Saturday, we hosted a public dialogue at the Nairobi Farmers Market in partnership with our colleagues from the Regional Coalition For Farmers Market

The event focused on the role of farmers markets in strengthening local food systems and creating opportunities for women and young farmers. We heard directly from vendors whose experiences showed how access to farmers markets can improve incomes, build resilience, and support empowerment.

A key discussion point was the persistent challenge of women’s access to land and finance. Local experiences demonstrated how direct-to-consumer platforms can increase production, enable investment in tools and equipment, and strengthen economic independence and agency for women in farming.

The event also provided an opportunity to connect with colleagues from Slow FOod Kenya, John Kariuki Mwangi and samson ngugi, and learn more about the Earth Markets they support across the country, as well as their work with chefs and community gardens. We look forward to strengthening these relationships and amplifying the voice of local food systems in Kenya together.

The discussion focused on three priorities:
- strengthening farmers market networks and advocacy
- advancing territorial food policies that connect urban and rural communities,
- increasing investment to expand market access and opportunities for farmers, especially women and youth.

A big thank you to Dennis Andaye and the whole Farmers Market Nairobi and teams for the warm hospitality and for hosting such an inspiring event. Our thanks also go to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for its continued support of these important policy dialogues.

The Future of Local Food Systems in Kenya: Public Spaces, Farmers Markets and Producer Rights - How can Kenya create stronger local food systems that work for farmers, consumers, and communities?

On Saturday, 6 June 2026, farmers, producer organizations, policymakers, county government representatives, researchers, consumers, women and youth groups, and civil society actors will come together in Nairobi for a policy dialogue exploring the future of local food systems in Kenya.

The discussion will focus on:
✅ Access to public spaces for farmers markets
✅ Policies that support producer-only farmers markets
✅ Producer rights and fair market participation
✅ Opportunities for women and youth in food systems
✅ Partnerships that strengthen local food economies

This dialogue is supported through the LoA Technical Assistance in the context of the FAO-led mapping research project on farmers markets and local food systems being implemented in Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, and Cuba.

Together, we will explore practical solutions and policy recommendations that can strengthen market access for small-scale farmers, support resilient local food economies, and build a more sustainable food future.

Celebrating the International Year of the Woman Farmer ( )

Meet Mia, who together with her husband left career-focused jobs behind to build a life closer to nature. In 2021, they bought an apple and pear orchard and began cultivating a small regenerative farm rooted in respect for the land, animals, and people.

Today, they organically manage 5 hectares of fruit trees alongside bees, chickens, vegetables, and berries, producing everything by hand using renewable energy from geothermal heating and solar power.

Through Grønt Marked, Mia values the direct connection with customers and the opportunity to strengthen local, sustainable food systems.

This year, we honour women like Mia: farmers creating healthier and more sustainable communities through care for both people and the planet.

As part of the project "Local Food Policies in Albania: Sustainable Short Value Chains and Farmers' Market", we are working alongside partners from Albania and Italy to strengthen the role of farmers, promote sustainable local production, support short food supply chains, and improve access to fresh, local food for consumers.

The project is financed by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo and implemented by Città Metropolitana di Bari as the lead partner and CIHEAMBari, WorldFMC,Bashkia Tiranë, Banco Alimentare, Agjencia për Administrimin e Tregjeve and Food Bank Albania.

The project aims to establish the first farmers market in Tirana while advancing policies to reduce food waste.

We are pleased to share that we have successfully completed three workshops within the project, hosted in Tirana. These sessions brought together partners, experts, local stakeholders and farmers in a valuable moment of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovative thinking.

A key step forward has been the first of three meetings with over 40 farmers from the areas surrounding Tirana. We presented the project, discussed the opportunities offered by the future farmers' market, and collected feedback on producers' interest and needs for long-term participation. We also held a coordination meeting with project partners to plan the next activities, including a second meeting in another area outside Tirana.

Together, we are laying the foundations for more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive local food systems in Albania.
