Father of American Beekeeping🐝
Many know of the Langsroth Hive, but where did it come from?
Lorenzo L. Langstroth (1810–1895) changed beekeeping forever. Often called the Father of American Beekeeping, he discovered the idea of “bee space”—the small gap bees naturally keep inside their hives. By designing wooden frames that used this space, Langstroth patented his movable-frame hive in 1852.
This idea improved on previous designs and meant beekeepers could lift out combs, check on their colonies, and harvest honey without destroying the hive. His design, known as the Langstroth hive, quickly became the standard and is still used by beekeepers all over the world today.
Langstroth’s work turned beekeeping into a more sustainable practice and shaped the way humans work with honeybees even now.
Langstroth is remembered for his contributions to the beekeeping community, and tomorrow we can remember his as well celebrating the holidays and his birthday!
