If VAT on fuel dropped from 16% to 13%, the price should go down—but not by a huge margin.
Here’s the simple breakdown:
VAT is charged on the base price.
A reduction of 3 percentage points doesn’t mean the fuel price drops by 3 shillings directly—it depends on the base cost.
Example:
If fuel was KSh 208 per litre (with 16% VAT):
Remove VAT:
Base price ≈ 208 ÷ 1.16 = KSh 179.31
Apply new VAT (13%):
New price ≈ 179.31 × 1.13 = KSh 202.62
Result:
Old price: KSh 208
New price: ≈ KSh 202.6
Expected drop: about KSh 5–6 per litre
Reality check:
If you don’t see that drop at the pump, it could be because:
Other costs increased (transport, exchange rate, global oil prices)
Government added/adjusted other levies (fuel has many taxes, not just VAT)
