Brewing the Delight of Lao Coffee: Aromdee Hosts the First Young Barista Championship in Luang Prabang

Earlier this month, Aromdee Nature, in collaboration with 원더스 Wonders International and Green Cup Project proudly hosted the very first Barista Championship in Luang Prabang during International Coffee and Tea Day(ICTD2025), an event that holds great significance in many ways. Most notably, it marked the first time that a Laos representative was selected to compete in the World Young Barista Championship, a global platform for rising coffee talents.

The World Young Barista Championship, organized by the Asia Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) for nearly a decade, is dedicated to discovering and nurturing young coffee professionals across Asia. ASCA has been working closely with Aromdee, sharing the mission to empower the next generation of coffee experts through professional training and meaningful opportunities.

This year, the championship was held across about ten Asian countries, and for the Luang Prabang competition, four professional judges from Korea joined two local judges from Laos to evaluate the contestants. Despite being the first-ever event of its kind in the city, participation was enthusiastic. Many young baristas applied, with five finalists advancing to the final round and three winners ultimately selected.

The judges praised the participants’ passion and creativity, noting the rapid growth of Lao coffee culture. The first-place winner from Vientiane will soon represent Laos in the world finals this November, while the second and third winners from Luang Prabang also impressed with their unique brewing styles and deep understanding of local coffee flavors.

The Young Barista Championship will return next year, continuing to celebrate the talent and potential of Lao youth in the coffee industry. Northern Laos’ Finest Coffee, Grown by Ethnic Minority Farmers

Aromdee recently hosted the very first youth barista competition in Luangprabang in partnership with Green Cup Project, marking a new milestone for the northern Laos coffee scene. Behind this achievement is Aromdee itself, a pioneering café and social enterprise dedicated to supporting local coffee farmers and promoting high-quality coffee.

Wonders International, a South Korean NGO, operating organization of Aromdee is strengthening sustainable value chains in northern Laos. Together, we collaborate with ethnic minority farmers in the highland regions to cultivate, process, and promote high-quality agricultural products, with coffee at the center of their work.

Since 2019, Wonders International and Aromdee has been supporting coffee farmers through providing seedlings and technical guidance, and have begun harvesting and processing coffee beans over the past two years.

Aromdee also works in close cooperation with the Asian Specialty Coffee Association in Korea to ensure consistent quality control from bean selection to roasting. Aromdee currently supplies roasted coffee beans on both a wholesale and retail basis and is ready to partner with cafés, hotels, restaurants, and businesses seeking ethically sourced, high-quality Lao coffee.
