The peanut plant grows as an annual and herbaceous. The bare stems thrive either upright or creeping and reach a height of up to 80 cm, but as a rule they usually reach a height of around 30 cm. The name 'peanut' is primarily due to the growth habit of the plant: after the above-ground, yellow flower has self-pollinated, it bends and burrows into the ground. The seeds ripen underground within 150 days. Two to three seeds are enclosed and protected by a woody, net-like shell.
