🥥 What Does BRCGS AA+ Mean for You as a Buyer?
When you see "BRCGS AA+" on a food product, what does it actually mean for you as a buyer? Most people scroll past it. But if you are in the food business, this small label tells you almost
everything you need to know about the company behind the product.
Let us break it down simply.
🌍 WHAT IS BRCGS?
BRCGS stands for Brand Reputation through Compliance Global Standards. It was created in 1998 when major UK retailers needed a reliable way to verify that their food suppliers were truly safe and consistent.
Today, it has grown into the world's most trusted food safety certification, used by more than 22,000 factories across 130+ countries. It was also the very first food safety standard to be
recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) — the international body that benchmarks all food safety schemes worldwide.
In simple words: BRCGS is the gold standard of the food industry. Walmart, Costco, Tesco, Whole Foods, Carrefour, and Unilever all require BRCGS certification from their suppliers before agreeing to do business with them.
📊 THE GRADING SYSTEM: FROM D TO AA+
Not all BRCGS certificates are the same. After every audit, factories receive a grade based on how well they performed:
⬜ Grade D: Basic compliance. Many issues found.
⬜ Grade C: Acceptable, but needs improvement.
🟩 Grade B: Good standard. Most retailers accept this.
🟩 Grade A: High compliance. Very few issues found.
🟨 Grade AA: Outstanding. Maximum 5 minor issues only. Zero critical failures.
🏆 Grade AA+: The absolute highest. Outstanding compliance AND the audit was completely unannounced.
That last point about AA+ is the most important. Let us explain why.
⚡WHAT DOES THE "+" ACTUALLY MEAN?
When a factory goes for the "+" grade, they agree to be audited with absolutely zero warning. The certification body can show up any day, any hour and the factory must be ready.
No time to clean up. No time to prepare documents. No time to brief staff. Everything must be perfect, every single day of the year — not just on the day of inspection.
This is why "+" is so powerful for buyers. It means the factory doesn't perform quality for an
audience. Quality is simply how they operate. Always.
🔍 WHAT DO AUDITORS CHECK?
BRCGS auditors go through every corner of the operation:
✅ Factory hygiene - walls, floors, equipment, air quality
✅ HACCP Safety Plan - risk identification and control
✅ Product traceability - from farm to final package

✅ Staff training records - every worker up to date
✅ Supplier verification - all raw materials checked
✅ Pest control - proper prevention systems
✅ Cold chain and storage - correct temperatures
