The Time Machine
Here is a summary of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells in about 1000 words:
The Time Machine is a science fiction novel that tells the story of a man who travels to the far future and discovers a world radically different from his own. The protagonist, known only as the Time Traveller, is an inventor and scientist who builds a machine that can transport him through time. He invites a group of friends to his house to demonstrate his invention, but they are skeptical of his claims. He shows them a small model of the machine and makes it disappear into thin air by sending it to the future. He then reveals that he has a larger machine that he intends to use himself. He promises to return and tell them his adventures.
The next week, the guests arrive again, but the Time Traveller is late. They find a note from him asking them to start dinner without him. Soon, he arrives, looking dirty, tired, and wounded. He tells them that he has just come back from the year 802,701, where he encountered two races of human descendants: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi are small, beautiful, and childlike creatures who live on the surface of the earth in a peaceful and harmonious society. They have no need for work, conflict, or intelligence, as they have plenty of food and resources. The Morlocks are pale, ape-like, and vicious creatures who live underground in the dark and operate the machinery that provides for the Eloi. They also hunt and eat the Eloi at night.
The Time Traveller explains that he befriended an Eloi woman named Weena, who saved him from drowning in a river. He also discovered that his time machine was stolen by the Morlocks and hidden inside a large metal statue of a sphinx. He tried to retrieve it, but was attacked by the Morlocks in their subterranean tunnels. He managed to escape with the help of some matches and a lever that he found in an old museum. He then decided to explore more of the future world with Weena, hoping to find a way to get his machine back. He came across a vast forest, where he started a fire to ward off the Morlocks. However, the fire got out of control and killed many Eloi and Morlocks, including Weena. The Time Traveller was devastated by the loss of his friend, but he also saw a chance to get to the sphinx. He ran to the statue and found that the Morlocks had opened the door to the pedestal where his machine was. He jumped into the machine and escaped, leaving the Morlocks behind.
The Time Traveller then tells his guests that he did not stop there, but continued to travel further into the future, where he saw the earth become a barren and desolate place, inhabited only by giant crabs and a black blob with tentacles. He also witnessed the sun grow larger and redder, and the moon disappear. He then returned to his own time, barely escaping the grasp of the blob. He concludes his story by saying that he has proof of his journey, and shows them some flowers that Weena had given him. He also says that he plans to go back to the future, to find out more about the fate of humanity.
The guests are amazed and bewildered by his tale, but some of them still doubt his sanity and honesty. They leave, except for the narrator, who stays behind to talk to the Time Traveller. The next day, the narrator returns to the Time Traveller’s house, but finds him gone. He sees the time machine missing, and a note from the Time Traveller saying that he has left for another journey. The narrator waits for him, but he never comes back. The narrator wonders what happened to him, and where he went. He ends the story by saying that he still has the flowers that the Time Traveller brought from the future, and that he often thinks of him and his adventures.
