A Spanish court in Madrid has sentenced Carlo Ancelotti, currently the Brazil national team coach and former Real Madrid manager, to one year in prison for tax fraud committed in 2014. He has also been fined €386,000 for failing to declare over €1 million in income from image rights during his first Real Madrid tenure .

The key details:

The conviction pertains only to 2014, with the 2015 charges dropped as the court couldn’t prove his tax residency in Spain that year .

Prosecutors originally sought a sentence of 4 years and 9 months, plus a fine of over €3 million, but the court reduced it to the minimum penalty and a much smaller fine .

Under Spanish law, for non-violent first-time offenders, sentences under two years are typically suspended, meaning Ancelotti likely won’t serve actual jail time .

Additionally, he will be barred from receiving public subsidies or tax incentives in Spain for three years .

Ancelotti’s defense argued that he relied on Real Madrid’s advisors and never intended to defraud the Spanish Treasury. He has paid the owed taxes (around April or December 2021), and with the sentence suspended, he won’t have to go to prison .
