IN THE 1920s, a group of 10 people from India started a small business making two types of Indian snacks called kacang putih at a settlement located at the foot of a limestone hill in Gunung Cheroh, Ipoh. The business actually started flourishing after tragedy struck the area in early 1970s. In 1973, part of the
hill collapsed onto the squatter colony, killing about 40 residents there. It is now a flourishing industry and Kampung Kacang Putih, as the village is known, is one of the country’s main supplier of the snacks.
