“Durian thief” is getting out of control. We need to take a more systematic approach to reduce the risk:
1. Dog – good deterrent, especially at night. Kampung dogs are usually more alert and territorial.
2. Solar lights – install around the orchard to reduce dark areas.
3. Motion sensor alarm / siren – simple systems can scare intruders.
4. CCTV (basic setup) – even a few units at key entry points can help monitor and deter.
5. Harvest frequency – collect fruits more frequently (daily or twice daily) to reduce loss.
6. Limit access points – block or control small roads/paths into the orchard.
7. Worker presence – occasional night patrol or staying overnight during peak season.
8. Community coordination – inform nearby farmers and watch out for suspicious activity together.
9. Fencing – install perimeter fencing (chain link or wire). Even simple fencing helps define boundary and acts as a strong deterrent. For better effect, combine with a locked gate at main access points.
Best approach is to combine a few methods, not rely on one only. Dog + lighting + fencing + frequent collection is already very effective.
