Short History & Why We Celebrate Independence Day in Namibia
Namibia’s Independence Day marks the end of a long struggle for freedom.
Before independence, Namibia was controlled by South Africa for many years. During this time, many Namibians were not free and had limited rights.
A liberation movement led by organizations like SWAPO fought for independence. After years of conflict and international support, Namibia finally became an independent country on 21 March 1990. On that day, the Namibian flag was raised for the first time, and Sam Nujoma became the country’s first president.
Why we celebrate:
- To remember the sacrifices made for freedom
- To honor the heroes who fought for independence
- To celebrate Namibia as a free and united nation
- To feel proud of our culture, people, and future
It’s a day of pride, unity, and remembering how far Namibia has come 🇳🇦
