Senate Rejects Motion To Release Nnamdi Kanu

The Senate has rejected a motion to release from the detention the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The motion which was moved by Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West) sought to address the constant sit-at-home order enforced by unknown gunmen in the South-East.

The lawmaker, in the motion co-sponsored by other lawmakers from the South-East, noted that the senators were aware that thousands of innocent lives had been lost since the action started, and properties worth over a trillion had been destroyed resulting in investors leaving the region.

He said, “The sit-at-home civil disobedience actions in the South-East have led to the disruption/destruction of economic activities and immeasurable financial losses for businesses, workers, and the local economy. Because, when people are forced to stay at home and businesses remain closed, productivity declines and income is reduced, affecting livelihoods and economic growth.

“The “sit-at-home” protests disrupt the education of students, leading to missed classes and delays in academic progress. And such prolonged disruptions have long-term effects on students’ learning outcomes and educational development; Disturbed that disruption of essential public services, such as healthcare, transportation, and waste disposal, continues to have a severe impact during “sit-at-home” protests which adversely affect the well-being and safety of the general population living in the South-East.”

IPOB had in August 2021 declared a sit-at-home order every Monday across the South-East to protest the continued detention of Kanu. The separatist group eventually suspended the order.

However, the leader of a faction of IPOB, Simon Ekpa, has continued to declare sit-at-home orders in the region despite the exercise being suspended by the IPOB faction led by Kanu.

Residents of the five South-East states: Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Anambra have constantly been killed

Hushpuppi who pleaded guilty in April 2021, to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud, by a United States District Court on Monday November 7.

BOOM!! 💥💥 EFCC Arrest NNPP Kogi Assembly Candidate With N326m and $140,500 Cash

EFCC, has arrested the Kogi State House of Assembly candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Ismaila Yusuf Atumeyi with N326million and $ 140,500 cash.

Atumeyi who is seeking to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly was arrested on Sunday, October 30, 2022 alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster, in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Also arrested in connection with the Fraud is Abdumalik Salau Femi, a former bank employee, who allegedly supplied the inside information that facilitated the attack on the bank by the syndicate. He was picked up on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lagos. Following his arrest, a search was conducted on his home in Morgan Estate, Ojodu where a total of $470,000 USD was recovered.

The arrest of the suspects followed months of investigation into the hacking of one of the commercial banks by a syndicate of fraudsters who pulled off a heist of N1.4billion.

2023: Ikpeazu and Abia South's Journey Beyond Talking

The people of Abia South have produced one of the most vociferous Senators in Nigeria in recent times. Their voice has been heard beyond the shores of the senatorial zone. They spoke and the rest of Nigeria heard them. But that is that!

Beyond talk, there is little or nothing the people of Abia South Senatorial District can point to as what has been their dividend since 2007 till date. Effective representation that benefits the people in real terms, in terms of attracting the needed infrastructure, social amenities and other federal government presence to their domain, all factors that significantly lead to the general improvement of lives, have been missing.

With a Governor like Ikpeazu, a more effective support from the Senate via the zone's Senator would have been a perfect compliment to the dogged efforts of the Governor to rewrite the story of Aba which is the technological hub and commercial nerve centre of the southeast and even beyond. The needed infrastructure to further stimulate trade and commercial activities and advance technological innovations in the city are too humongous that it will take concerted efforts and collaboration between the federal and state governments to achieve through legislative framework at the national level. That is what strategic representation beyond talk does for a state.

Effective representation is strategic; it is defending your people in all circumstances, being their voice, and even more importantly, being strategic enough to ensure that you extract and attract for them their share of dividends of democracy from the national level.

Having been an executive governor for eight years, one from Abia South, and having been faced with the enormous challenges of fixing the infrastructure deficit of the area, part of which he tried to resolve by building over 160 roads across the state, most of them strategic to the trade and commerce
