Recently, the Federal Government announced a temporary ban on the export of raw Shea nuts. The intention is laudable—encouraging value addition through local processing so that Nigeria earns more and commands a premium in international markets.

But the suddenness of the announcement has left Shea nut traders and merchants in a quagmire—right in the middle of trading season when payments had already been settled.

This raises critical questions:
