A lot of people keep asking me:
“How much does it cost to start catfish farming in 2025?”
Let me be very frank with you, so you don’t put your hard-earned money into a business you don’t understand and later start blaming “the economy”, “feed price”, or “government”.
First, understand this 👇🏽
👉 There is no fixed cost for starting catfish farming.
The cost varies, and it varies a lot.
Why? Because it depends on:
Your country
Your state
Your city
Your location
And most importantly… what you already have.
So instead of shouting figures that will mislead you, I’ll share general knowledge of what determines the cost, knowing fully well that prices will differ from place to place.
Before you ask “How much?”,
You should be answering these questions first 👇🏽
1️⃣ Your Location & Market:
Where are you located, and where will you sell your fish?
Fish farming is not just production, it’s market access.
The price of feed, fingerlings, labour, water, and even the selling price of fish depends on your location and market demand.
2️⃣ How Many Fish Are You Starting With?
Are you starting with:
300 fish?
500 fish?
Or more?
Your startup cost rises or falls directly with your stocking number.
Starting small is not a sin, starting blindly is.
3️⃣ What Are You Stocking?
Juvenile fish (cheaper but longer rearing time), or
Jumbo size (more expensive but faster harvest)?
This choice affects:
Feeding cost
Time to harvest
Risk level
4️⃣ What Type of Pond Are You Using?:
Your pond type alone can change your cost completely:
Tarpaulin pond
Plastic tank
Concrete pond
Earthen pond
Each one has different setup costs, durability, and management requirements.
5️⃣ What Is Your Target Harvest Size?
Are you aiming for:
Melange size (0.5–0.7kg), or
Table size (1kg–1.5kg)?
Your target size determines:
How long you’ll rear the fish
How much feed you’ll buy
How much profit (or loss) you’ll make
📌 Bottom line:
If you can’t clearly answer these questions, you’re not ready to calculate the cost of starting catfish farming and you’re not ready to start yet.
