Control of Whiteflies in Vegetables: A Complete Management Guide for Tomato, Eggplant and Beans
Whiteflies are among the most destructive pests in vegetable production. They affect crops such as tomato, eggplant, beans, and okra by sucking plant sap and transmitting viral diseases. Severe infestations can reduce yields by 30–80% if not properly managed.
Introduction:
Whiteflies reproduce very quickly, especially in warm conditions. A single female can lay 100–300 eggs, and the life cycle can be completed in 2–3 weeks, leading to rapid population buildup.
Identification:
* Small white flying insects found on the underside of leaves
* Eggs and nymphs also found under leaves
* Leaves may appear yellow, sticky (honeydew), and covered with black sooty mold
Damage:
* Sap sucking weakens plants
* Transmission of viral diseases (e.g., leaf curl, yellowing)
* Reduced photosynthesis due to sooty mold
Host crops:
* Tomato
* Eggplant
* Beans
* Okra
* Many other vegetables
Favorable conditions:
* Warm temperatures (20–30°C)
* Dry conditions
* Dense planting and poor air circulation
Integrated whitefly management:
Cultural control:
* Remove weeds that host whiteflies
* Avoid continuous cropping of susceptible crops
* Use proper spacing to improve airflow
* Plant resistant or tolerant varieties where available
Mechanical control:
* Use yellow sticky traps (10–20 traps per hectare)
* Hand removal in small fields
Biological control:
* Encourage natural enemies such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps
* Avoid excessive use of harmful pesticides
Chemical control:
Use insecticides when infestation is high.
