🐥 CHICK ASPERGILLOSIS (BROODER PNEUMONIA) IN POULTRY 🦠
Chick aspergillosis, commonly known as Brooder Pneumonia, is a dangerous fungal disease that mainly affects young chicks, turkey poults, ducklings, and other poultry birds. The disease is caused by a fungus called Aspergillus fumigatus which thrives in damp, dirty, and moldy environments.

⚠️ Aspergillosis is NOT usually spread from bird to bird. Birds become infected when they inhale fungal spores from contaminated surroundings.
🔍 COMMON SOURCES OF INFECTION
❌ Moldy feed
❌ Wet litter or bedding
❌ Damp brooders
❌ Poor ventilation
❌ Spoiled grains
❌ Dirty hatcheries or incubators
❌ High humidity in poultry houses
Young chicks are highly vulnerable because their respiratory systems are still developing.
🚨 CLINICAL SIGNS IN CHICKS
Affected birds may show:
• Difficulty breathing
• Gasping for air
• Rapid breathing
• Open-mouth breathing
• Weakness and depression
• Reduced feed intake
• Sleepiness
• Poor growth
• Sudden deaths in severe outbreaks
In many cases, birds show respiratory distress without nasal discharge.
🫁 POSTMORTEM LESIONS
During postmortem examination, farmers or veterinarians may observe:
🔸 White or yellow nodules in the lungs
🔸 Thickened air sacs
🔸 Cheese-like fungal plaques
🔸 Pneumonia-like lesions
⚡ WHY ASPERGILLOSIS IS DANGEROUS
The fungus damages the respiratory system, reducing oxygen supply in the body. Severe infections can cause high mortality, especially in poorly managed brooder houses.
💊 TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT
Unfortunately, treatment can be difficult once the disease spreads deeply into the lungs and air sacs.
Management measures include:
✅ Removing moldy feed immediately
✅ Replacing wet litter
✅ Improving ventilation
✅ Reducing humidity
✅ Cleaning and disinfecting brooders
✅ Providing supportive vitamins (especially Vitamins A & E)
✅ Consulting a veterinarian for antifungal medication recommendations
🛡️ PREVENTION IS THE BEST CONTROL
✔️ Keep litter dry at all times
✔️ Store feeds properly to prevent mold growth
✔️ Maintain good airflow in poultry houses
✔️ Clean hatcheries and incubators regularly
✔️ Avoid overcrowding
✔️ Remove spoiled feeds immediately
✔️ Practice proper brooder hygiene
💡 REMEMBER:
Good poultry management and proper hygiene are the strongest defenses against fungal diseases like aspergillosis.
Healthy environment = Healthy chicks 🐣
