🌿 DISCOVERING PASSION FRUIT

Growing up in the eastern part of Nigeria in Africa. I never really came across passion fruit. It simply wasn’t something we saw often in our markets—or talked about! 🍉🍍 We had our beautiful variety of local fruits,

But, I stumbled on this wrinkly fruit—and it was something nice.
It is said to be known as the "king of the fruit juice" and ''Spice fruit" because it has aroma of more than 130 fruits including apple, guava, banana, strawberry, mango, Pineapple, and etc.

But what truly amazed me were the nutritional benefits packed into this little fruit:

✨ Rich in Vitamin C – supports immune system, protect the cell from damage, prevent certain risks of cancer.

✨ Contains antioxidants – rich in Polyphenols which helps fight inflammation and heart disease conditions.

✨ Good source of Vitamin A – supports skin and eye health, reproduction and immunity.

✨ Fiber: Has a lot of fiber, which lowers cholesterol, diabetes risk, heart disease and certain cancer.

✨ It offers a small amount of iron. The body doesn't absorb iron from plants very well. However the iron in Passion Fruit comes with a lot of vitamin C which is known to enhance iron absorption.

It's also super versatile—you can enjoy it fresh, in smoothies, over yogurt, or even in salad dressings.

No one food contains all the food nutrients so diversification is the key. Make use of the fruitsbin season.

*FERMENTATION IN GARRI*

During my one year program in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State some years ago, I had several food choices because of the Agricultural status of the State, and I utilized the opportunity.

I remembered telling one of the Garri sellers that I wanted the Sour Garri, the first question she asked was if I'm a corper, when I asked why, she said that it's always the educated non indigenes that demand for their Sour Garri.

Fermentation plays a significance role in garri processing.
For garri processing, the fermentation method commonly is to put the grated cassava pulp into bags and tie it tightly, then take about 2-5 days sealed fermentation.
Fermented Garri has Sour taste.

Garri producers, please Garri processing shouldn't take just a day before Frying 🙏

I bought an attractive watermelon some days ago but noticed how tasteless and awful the taste was. I had to go back to the Aboki to find out WHY🤔

Most fruit vendors use certain chemicals like Calcium Carbide (Carbide) to artificially ripen fruits to maximize profit without considering the adverse health effects.
Watermelon, banana, orange, udara (African star apple), and mango etc are common fruits that are artificially ripened.

The continuous consumption of fruits artificially ripened with these chemical substances is dangerous to health.
It could cause respiratory illnesses, neurological problems and even cancer in a short and/or long term exposure.

To our fruit vendors and farmers, please help us. You reading, please pass the knowledge to any fruit vendors you know.

As a Dietitian, how do I ensure I serve you Original/unadulterated Honey.

First, I make sure I meet the farmers, luckily I'm from a place where honey is cultivated in large quantities. I negotiate with them, I tell them that I will pay off whatever money they will get from diluting the honey.

Here in Lagos, there are many cheap honey but people actually know what they want.
