When Heart Pretends: Episode 5

Amara stared at the message on her phone.

“Did you get home safe?”

It was such a simple question.

But for some reason… it made her heart feel warm.

For a moment, she considered ignoring it.

Old habits.

Old walls.

But something inside her whispered, “Just reply.”

So she typed slowly.

“Yes, I did. Thank you.”

Almost immediately, three dots appeared on the screen.

Daniel was typing.

“Good. I didn’t want to be responsible for someone getting sick in the rain.”

Amara smiled without realizing it.

Their conversation that night was simple.

Nothing too serious.

Just small talk… jokes… and a few random questions.

But when Amara finally looked at the time, she was shocked.

It was already 1:30 a.m.

“How did we talk this long?” she whispered to herself.

The next morning at the office, Amara tried to act normal.

But Lilian noticed something immediately.

“Why are you smiling at your phone like that?” she asked suspiciously.

Amara quickly locked the screen.

“I’m not smiling.”

Lilian crossed her arms.

“You are.”

Before Amara could respond, Daniel walked into the office.

Their eyes met.

And this time… Amara didn’t look away.

Instead, she gave him a small smile.

Daniel seemed surprised… but happy.

Lilian watched the entire moment carefully.

Then she leaned closer to Amara and whispered.

“Oh no…”

Amara frowned. “What?”

Lilian shook her head slowly.

“You’re starting to like him.”

Amara immediately denied it.

“No, I’m not.”

But deep inside her heart…

She knew something had started changing.

Because for the first time in years…

Amara was no longer afraid of someone entering her world.

But what Amara didn’t know was this:

Someone from her past had just returned to the city.

Someone who once broke her heart into pieces.

And very soon…

He was going to walk back into her life.

When Heart pretends : episode 4

The rain didn’t stop for a long time that evening.

Amara stood under Daniel’s umbrella, unsure of what to say.

It felt strange… being that close to him.

“You don’t have to wait with me,” she finally said. “You can go.”

Daniel looked at the heavy rain and then back at her.

“And leave you here alone?” he asked calmly. “I’m not that kind of man.”

Amara didn’t respond.

They began walking slowly together under the umbrella.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel broke the silence.

“Why do you avoid me?” he asked softly.

Amara stopped walking.

“I don’t avoid you.”

Daniel gave a small smile. “You do.”

She looked away.

The truth was… she did.

Not because Daniel had done anything wrong.

But because every time she looked at him, she felt something she didn’t want to feel again.

Emotion.

“I just don’t believe in… all this,” Amara said quietly.

Daniel looked confused. “All what?”

“Love. Relationships. Promises.”

For a moment, Daniel didn’t say anything.

Then he nodded slowly.

“Someone hurt you badly,” he said.

Amara’s chest tightened.

Mark’s face flashed in her memory.

She quickly looked away again.

“That part of my life is over,” she said firmly.

Daniel didn’t argue.

Instead, he said something that surprised her.

“You don’t have to believe in love right now.”

Amara looked at him.

“Then why are you still trying?” she asked.

Daniel shrugged lightly.

“Because sometimes people who pretend they don’t believe in love… are the ones who need it the most.”

Amara didn’t reply.

But that sentence stayed in her mind long after they parted ways that night.

Later, when she got home, her phone buzzed.

It was a message from an unknown number.

“Did you get home safe?”

Amara already knew who it was.

For a long moment, she stared at the screen.

Then slowly… she smiled.

And for the first time since meeting Daniel…

She replied.

The days after Daniel joined the company became strangely uncomfortable for Amara. Not because he disturbed her, but because he didn’t. Daniel never tried too hard to talk to her; he never forced a conversation. He simply greeted her whenever they crossed paths with a simple, calm, and respectful "Good morning, Amara." At first, Amara ignored him most of the time. However, something about his patience confused her. Most men she had met would either try too hard or disappear when she showed no interest. Daniel did neither.

One afternoon during lunch break, Amara and Lilian were sitting at their usual table when Daniel walked into the cafeteria. Immediately, Lilian leaned closer and whispered, “Your admirer has arrived.” Amara sighed. “He’s not my admirer.” Lilian raised an eyebrow. “Then why does he look at you like that?” Amara tried not to look, but curiosity betrayed her. Her eyes lifted slightly, and there he was, Daniel, looking directly at her. The moment their eyes met, he smiled again - not the confident kind of smile, but the gentle kind that made Amara feel strangely nervous.

Later that evening, as Amara was leaving the office building, the rain suddenly started pouring heavily. She stood at the entrance, waiting for it to slow down. Then she heard footsteps beside her, Daniel. Without saying a word, he opened his umbrella and held it slightly over her head. “You’ll get soaked if you wait too long,” he said softly. Amara looked at him, surprised. “You don’t have to do that.” Daniel shrugged lightly. “Maybe I want to.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. The rain fell harder around them, and for the first time since meeting him, Amara didn’t walk away. But deep inside her heart, something else was happening, something she had promised herself would never happen again. Her walls were starting to crack.

After the small accident at the restaurant, Amara thought that would be the last time she would ever see Daniel.

She was wrong.

Three days later, as she walked into her office building, she heard a familiar voice behind her.

“Please tell me you’re not going to spill another drink if you see me again.”

Amara froze.

Slowly, she turned around.

It was him, Daniel, standing there with the same calm smile that strangely irritated her.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, surprised.

Daniel lifted a file in his hand.

“Apparently, I work here now.”

Amara frowned.

“You’re joking.”

“I wish,” he laughed. “First day.”

Of all the companies in the city, of all the buildings, of all the offices…

It had to be the same one.

Amara shook her head and walked away quickly.

She didn’t want to get involved with any man again, especially not one who seemed so persistent.

Later that afternoon, Lilian came to her desk.

“I heard we have a new staff,” Lilian whispered. “Tall, calm, fine-looking man.”

Amara didn’t look up from her computer.

“Not interested.”

Lilian smirked.

“Too late. I think he’s interested in you.”

At that exact moment, Daniel walked past their office.

He glanced inside.

His eyes met Amara’s again.

And this time… he didn’t look away.

Instead, he smiled.

Amara quickly looked down at her computer screen, but her heart was beating faster than she wanted to admit.

Something about this man felt dangerous, not because he looked bad, but because for the first time in a long time…

Her heart reacted.

And Amara knew one thing very clearly:

It ended in heartbreak.

Amara had mastered the art of pretending.
Pretending she was happy,
pretending she didn’t care,

the man who promised her forever… then disappeared like she meant nothing.

“Men are the same,” Amara told Lilian one evening while sipping coffee.
“They promise heaven and deliver heartbreak.”

Lilian nodded. “That’s why you should focus on yourself.”

Amara agreed.
Love was no longer part of her plans.

Until the day Daniel walked into her life.

It started on a normal afternoon at a small restaurant. Amara was quietly eating when a stranger accidentally bumped into her table,
causing her drink to spill slightly.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry,” the man said quickly.

Amara looked up, ready to complain,
but the moment their eyes met, something strange happened.

The man smiled nervously.
“I think the universe just embarrassed me so I could meet you,” he joked.

Amara rolled her eyes.
“Nice line. I’m not interested.”

Daniel chuckled. “That’s okay. I’m patient.”

Amara didn’t realize it then… but that was the beginning of a story that would change her life.
Because sometimes the person who walks into your life by accident…
is the one your heart has been waiting for.
