WINE AND FOOD TASTINGS THIS WEEKEND

We’ll be opening some great wine for tastings on Saturday at both our Tannery and Good St stores.

For the Sauvignon fans, there’s the Astoria Suade from Veneto, Italy. It’s soft, fruit-forward—think passionfruit, peach, nectarine, a touch of green leaf and blackcurrant—and full of personality. Very drinkable!

Moving over to Lisbon in Portugal, the Portada Winemaker’s Selection Tinto is packed with rich dark fruit flavours with a touch of leather and spice. It’s another easy drinker, perfect with nibbles.

And to help you hang on to the last days of summer, the bright La Bailonga Sangria is full of citrus and apples and all that good summer stuff, with a nice low 7% alcohol.

On the food side, we have the high-end Peñagallo crisps in all three flavours (black garlic, black truffle and sea salt), a special dip that the Tannery store has whipped up, and also some of the ganache used in the amazing pistachio and white chocolate tart that Chef Dave whipped up over in Conway Lane the other week.

Want to try it at home? Here’s the ganache recipe, straight from Chef Dave’s pen:

60g La Chinata pistachio creme
180g cream
Dash of vanilla essence
Pinch of salt
240g white compound chocolate

Put all the ingredients except the chocolate into a saucepan and bring slowly to a simmer while whisking occasionally. Once combined and slightly thickening, pour over the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Allow to sit for a couple of minutes, then whisk vigorously until combined.

Use as a tart filling, cake icing or chocolate truffles.

WINE AND FOOD TASTINGS AT FRESCA

Come down this Saturday to try a whole range of gourmet tastes from some of our favourite suppliers.

Both our Good St store in Rangiora and our Tannery store will be cracking open a spectacular 2016 Lar de Paula Blanco Reserva Limited Edition - the chance to experience a complex aged white Rioja at its absolute peak.

At Good St, you can also nibble on pear and chocolate panettone smothered in La Chinata pistachio cream. Both are on special with big price drops, so get in quick.

At the Tannery, you can also try our Kiki cracker mix whipped up into delicious crackers, dipped into our Agromonte green or black olive pestos. Yum!

This week’s wine tasting at both our Good St and Tannery stores will feature the spectacular 2016 Lar de Paula Blanco Reserva Limited Edition—the chance to experience a complex aged white Rioja at its absolute peak.

Lar de Paula has pulled out all stops for its Blanco Reserva. Harvested from 60-year-old vines, the Viura and Malvasia grapes are crushed and destemmed to free the must, placed in stainless steel tanks to undergo cold maceration for 24 hours, pressed again to further separate the must from the skins, and then transferred to new French and American oak barrels for slow fermentation over 25 days. The wine then goes off to spend a minimum of 12 months in new American and French oak barrels, rounded off with another 12 months in the bottle.

The 2016 vintage that you’ll be trying—part of a very limited edition of only 3,276 bottles, each individually numbered—is deep yellow and oaky with a lovely oily mouth feel, with enough delicate acid remaining to add liveliness to this sophisticated wine. Expect flavours of quince, honey and sherry.

There isn’t much Rioja Blanco around—in fact, it’s still only around 10% of the Rioja region’s production—so it’s a terrific addition to any serious wine collection. On top of that, white Rioja has the unusual characteristic of great cellaring potential. The 2016 Lar de Paula Blanco Reserva Limited Edition is certainly a bottle that you could open today or cellar for another five years.

Come down this Saturday to try a whole range of gourmet tastes from some of our favourite suppliers. Both our Good St store in Rangiora and our Tannery store will be cracking open a bottle of Sommos Chardonnay—yes, another fabulous wine from the Sommos team. This Chardonnay has a lovely complex nose and a fresh, fruity, rounded palate with buttery and toasty hints from the barrel. Delicious!

You can also nibble on a selection of sheep cheeses from Quesos Vega Sotuélamos, an artisan Spanish cheese producer operating high on the Castilla-La Mancha plains. Manchego was the company’s starting point, but their rosemary and black truffle sheep cheeses have been on all our grazing platters since they arrived.

They’ll be served with the vibrant La Chinata Pepper and Chilli Spread and the intensely flavoured Chorizo Iberico Velita from Nico Jamones, a family-owned company from Ciudad Real in Spain with over 50 years experience producing high-quality Serrano and Iberian hams.

This weekend we’re heading to north-eastern Italy.

We’re pouring three wines from two fascinating regions:
🌿 Friuli-Venezia Giulia – Italy’s cultured, borderland white-wine powerhouse
🍷 Veneto – home of Venice, Verona, some seriously charming reds, and some great classic whites

Here’s what’s in your glass:

🤍 Ribolla Gialla I Feudi di Romans 2022
From the banks of the Isonzo River, this is Ribolla at its most elegant. Think nectarine, white peach, lemon, baked apple and a hint of thyme. Vibrant acidity, medium body, long clean finish. Classy. Confident. The kind of white that makes fried seafood very happy.

If you don’t know Ribolla Gialla yet, you should. It’s an ancient grape grown almost exclusively in Friuli and neighbouring Slovenia, known for delicate florals, zingy acidity and that lovely mineral edge. These wines are made to express the grape — pure, bright, and full of character.

🍷 Santa Sofia Bardolino Classico DOC 2024
From just north of Verona, this is your new “quick lunch” red. Sour cherries, raspberries, liquorice and a whisper of leather, with a juicy, fresh palate. Light on its feet but persistent. Beautiful with mushrooms or white meats.

Made from the classic Veneto trio — Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara — this is proof that red wine doesn’t have to be heavy to be satisfying.

🤍 Astoria Sauvignon “Suade” 2023
From the Prosecco Hills of Veneto (yes, those UNESCO-listed ones), this Sauvignon Blanc is soft, fruit-forward and full of personality. Passionfruit, peach, nectarine, a touch of green leaf and blackcurrant, with a long finish. Medium body, medium dry, very drinkable.

Whether you’re new to Mediterranean wines or just curious to taste something a little different, this tasting is designed for exploration. No wine snobbery. Just good wine, good stories, and the chance to discover something you might not normally pick up.
