Spirit of Adventure – Update

The application window is now closed. Huge thanks to everyone who applied 🙌

The next step is selecting candidates, which I expect will take a few weeks. People will be contacted sometime in February.

Selections will be made by a marking panel, so the process will be fair and unbiased.

If you missed the deadline and would still like to apply, please send me a DM and I can look at accepting late applications.

How amazing is this! Cohnor has PYO Berries in Marshland Road, and this season the flooding meant no raspberries. But that hasn’t stopped him doing something truly amazing. Cohnor is offering 3 scholarships to the Spirit of Adventure, a life changing experience aboard a sailing ship. It’s inspiring to hear about the impact it had for Cohnor and the generosity he’s shown in wanting to make sure more people get to experience it. Do you know someone aged 16-19 who would benefit from this amazing experience? If so head to the PYO Berries page and fill out the form, applications close on the 12th of January!

*Spirit of Adventure Scholarship update*

Happy New Year everyone! 🎉
Just a reminder that applications for the three Spirit of Adventure scholarships were originally due on 5 January. I’m extending the deadline to 12 January to give anyone who hasn’t applied yet a bit more time.

If you’ve been meaning to apply, now’s a great time to do it so you don’t forget later. There are three scholarships available for lucky candidates aged 16–19.

Just in case you missed it.

It is with great honour that I can announce PYO Berries NZ will still be giving away THREE full Spirit of Adventure scholarships, valued at $2,995 each, to three deserving candidates!

This has been a goal of mine from the very start: to help send young people on this life-changing experience. I was fortunate enough to attend earlier this year, and with thanks to the support of ASB Bank, a generous individual donor, and my own contribution, this is possible.

If you don’t know much about Spirit of Adventure Trust, I highly recommend checking them out.

To find the candidates, I’ve created an application form that anyone can fill out. Individuals can apply themselves, or there is the option to nominate someone on behalf of another person. Please tag, share, and help spread the word through our young community, especially if you know someone who would really benefit from this opportunity.

Experiences like this are rare, but they genuinely make a difference in a young person’s life, helping build confidence, skills, and experiences that stay with them for a long time. Having been on it myself, I can confidently say it truly does.
The selection process will involve multiple people to ensure it is fair and unbiased. If you are aged 16–19, or know someone who would be deserving, please consider applying.

Application form:

Applications close January 12th, so please make sure submissions are in before then.

Hey everyone, I have some bad news and some good news. Please read to the end

Bad news first:
As most of you are aware, the berries have been struggling this season. As I mentioned in my previous post, I was unsure whether I would be able to open the gates, and unfortunately, that time has come.

Sadly, I have had to call this season off for PYO Berries NZ. The raspberries are very small, with only underdeveloped fruit growing. I’m really sorry about this, and I ask that you source your raspberries elsewhere this season. Vegeland is just down the road, so please support other local businesses and pop in to see them.

Thank you so much to everyone for your support this season; it has genuinely meant a lot. I’ll now be putting all my effort into making next season possible.

🎉 Now for some really exciting news: 🎉
Following my previous post, which gained nationwide attention thanks to Stuff NZ, I’ve had some incredibly generous people reach out regarding the Spirit of Adventure scholarships I intended to give away with this season’s profits.

*Bad news – please read*

After a wet winter, our raspberries have suffered from waterlogging and root stress. Sadly, this will be the toughest season this place has ever seen; the fruit will be minimal and not up to the standard we’ve all come to expect.

I’ve spent over 400 hours after school and all my weekends pruning, w**ding, and doing everything I can to make PYO Berries NZ better than ever. I removed almost every single w**d to make this season safe for all families. I even stepped away from my favourite sport, triathlon, to focus fully on the berries and, at times, put less focus into school and exams.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed the plants are extremely small compared to last year. I’ve come to realise that the wet weather has caused severe root stress (Phytophthora). As the berries develop, the damaged root systems may cause plants to shrivel or die entirely. Hearing this outcome after all that effort has been incredibly hard.

But as Henry Ford said, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” I’m taking that to heart. Even though this season feels like a setback, I know it’s also an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve both as a teenager and as a grower.

With some fruit set on the plants already, I expect to try opening and see what happens, but I can’t guarantee quality or that we’ll be open for long. I’m only 17 and not an expert, but this journey has been a significant learning curve. Please keep an eye on Facebook for updates regarding opening.

I wanted to let everyone know early, so you can make arrangements to get your berries elsewhere this season, especially for Christmas Eve. Thank you again to everyone who’s been part of this journey. Your support has meant the world to me.

Kind regards,
Cohnor Walsh

Hey everyone,

🍓🌱 I know many of you have been waiting for this news, and I’m excited to announce that we WILL be opening this summer! Over the past few months I’ve been busy pruning and getting everything ready, and I can’t wait to see you all when we open. 🌱🍓

I also want to share a personal milestone. Over the past ten days, I took part in the 10-DAY DEVELOPMENT VOYAGE with Spirit Of Adventure, and thanks to your support, I finally was able to do it. This voyage truly changed me and helped me grow as a person.

From the first day, we were challenged to work as a team, navigate the ship, and take responsibility for each other’s safety. Near the end of the voyage, my peers elected me as first mate (second in charge) for our trainee day. The professional crew stepped down and let us students run the entire ship by ourselves for 24 hours. Leading a 40-person team, setting plans, delegating tasks, and keeping the spirit high has taught me how to stay calm under pressure and make decisions for the good of the whole group. My confidence has grown tremendously.

Without access to phones or technology, we relied completely on communication and trust with one another. I have learned that real leadership is not about giving orders; it is about supporting people, listening, and bringing out everyone’s strengths. The lessons I’ve learned and friendships I've built will remain with me for life.

So thank you to everyone who came and supported PYO Berries last summer, I couldn’t be more grateful.

We sincerely apologize for the late notice, but after careful consideration, we have made the decision to close for the season. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough berries 🍓 to open tomorrow, so it’s the right call to wrap things up for now.

Please help us spread the word 🗣️, especially to those who may not be on Facebook.

Stay tuned 🔔—more details about next season will be coming soon! We truly appreciate all of your incredible support this season.

As a 16-year-old, I’ve worked hard to keep everything in shape, but there are a few w**ds still left. The best berries are often hidden deeper in the bushes—so take your time, crouch down, and look up into the plants to find the best ones!
