I started to harvest Pepita pumpkin seeds yesterday.
Because my garden and house are far apart, I cut up pumpkins, collect seeds in my garden
and then take only the seeds to home to cure. The pumpkin flesh stays in my garden to be discomposed. None of our animals are impressed by it. I would take some to my worms. I don’t feel like doing pumpkin carve 🎃 this year….
There is not much space to cure them so I harvest seeds little by little.
It is actually a time consuming job but I appreciate to grow such nutritious food!

My bathtub rice seems to be growing well. I’ve started thinking how I could upgrade it next year.
The second photo is Japanese soul food, Umeboshi✨ It was so lucky we were given some local ume (Japanese apricot). They are supposed to be sun dried at the top summer but ours are still in brine.

I finally started tidying up my green house. My luffa sponge plants are growing very well, one of them has reached the ceiling. Hopefully I can make some decent sponges from them🧽
My capsicums, yams, tomatoes and a rock melon are also enjoying the warmth in the green house.

I’m growing various kind of dry beans this summer. Dry beans are great, they keep forever in the pantry.
My first harvest is ones like black turtle beans. The plant is growing vigorously in my pinto beans row but I didn’t plant that! It’s a mystery, I don’t know how it got in there…
Anyway the beans are shiny black& beautiful, happily growing in such a cool summer, and ready to pick at the earliest.

I made a trial batch of gherkin relish and bottled to preserve with gherkins, onions and early apples 🧅🥒🍎 grown here.
It has a great texture and flavor!
I think it’s a better cucumber year than usual because it’s been not very hot.

I wasn’t keen on any paddling due to my carpal tunnel syndrome and I want use dry days for orchard work but I was dragged to a kayak trip to lake Rotoroa in Nelson Lakes National park for 2 nights. Actually it turned out to be a very nice trip and I’m glad we made it for it when weather conditions were perfect!

I made the first batch of gherkin & shiso (Japanese perilla) kimchi with new recipe that doesn’t have apples/nashi 😃, but does rice syrup instead in the sauce. It tastes great but fruit makes deeper flavor

An update on my rice project 🌾
My ice cream box rice started growing their ears at the very early stage. I think It should have grown their leaves taller first.
Because the plants have switched to a reproduction mode, I think it was too late to transplant, but I had already prepared a bathtub planter, so I did put the plants in there. Let’s see how they grow.
Anyway I feel content to some degree as I got this project started this year. I’ll do it better next year😙

Another post for today! We were going on holiday in a national park but put off due to bad weather. Actually I feel relieved because I do tough physical activities all the time and there are plenty of things to get done😅 Also we have just done our girl’s birthday celebrations.
The photo is my pumpkin & yam patch in our apple section. Again, there are so many Pekekos so I put a large bird net to keep birds away until the seedlings establish their root to not get pulled out!

Pink oyster mushroom that grows from a growing kit for my girl’s Christmas present flourishes.🌼🌸It smells a bit like seafood. I cooked it with garlic, soy sauce and some sweetener. Our young people love it except for my girl 🙄 She really enjoys observing the mushroom growing though

It’s a green house I built with rusty waratahs, bamboos, sheep meshes, and plastic sheets that my brother in law got from a farm that closed down. So it doesn’t cost much at all.
I feel relieved I finished this project. It took a lot of trial & error and I was stressed about the slow progress. Anyway it doesn’t get blown away and keeps the space very warm!
I’ve planted luffa sponges, yams, tomatoes and ginger. I’ll put red capsicum plants as well. Let’s see how they grow😌

My garden finally started taking off. It had another Pukeko attack that pulled out and killed a few seedlings before Christmas so I got up early and did work there to scare them some times. Luckily it worked and the plants now are growing fast and making green corridors, yay!!

I have started harvesting early garlic! I think this year is better crop because there were good rains over October and November.
I didn’t need to water them at all)
Our apples got more black spots than usual years though 😱
I collected fallen leaves from local people for mulching last winter, It worked so well, it’s been suppressing w**ds well, saved my time and energy to w**d. ( I still needed to hand w**d though) AND it’s great for soil & garlic.
Our fruit storages are empty this time of a year so I can use them to cure my garlic☺️
