Motherhood and cacao.
A connection to fertility, femininity, nourishment, ancestry, and the earth.
The ceremonial piece known as “Mama Cacao” (100 A.D.) depicts a female figure with a cacao-shaped body and a human face breastfeeding an infant adorned with ear ornaments.
In this ritual vessel, the female body and the cacao fruit become one. The mother does not appear separate from nature; she is nature itself. Fertile earth, nourishment, abundance, and ancestral continuity.
“Mama Cacao” reminds us that feeding is also a spiritual act. That offering drink, holding, and caring have long been ways of transmitting memory, love, and life.
Perhaps that is why cacao still feels so deeply maternal: because it exists to nourish, open, and bring people together.

🇵🇪 Inspired by the ceremonial piece “Mama Cacao Mochica,” Ancient Peru, 100 A.D.

Happy Mother’s Day!

As part of his visit to Cusco, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Ambassador of Australia to Peru and Bolivia to Kaukawawa’s office. 🇦🇺🇵🇪

During this exchange, we shared the potential of Peruvian cacao as a driver of sustainable economic and social development. As the most biodiverse cacao origin in the world and the 8th largest global producer, Peru is uniquely positioned to connect with markets like Australia, where demand for high-quality, traceable, and sustainably sourced cacao continues to grow.

At Kaukawa Cacao, we highlighted our work in traceability, organic production, and collaboration with native communities—and the role of women across the value chain.

From Cusco, home of Chuncho cacao, a new generation of fine chocolate is gaining global recognition, positioning the region as an emerging origin for high-quality bean-to-bar and tree-to-bar chocolate.

During his visit we tasted award winning chocolates:

This visit reflects a shared vision to strenghten
connections between origin and conscious global markets.
