*Decorate the houses with the Parol*
The tradition of decorating houses, streets and squares with lights goes further in the Philippines. There, then, it is decorated with the traditional Parol, a large circular lantern that contains the star that guided the 3 wise men. Paroles hang from the windows of houses and from the busiest streets of cities, both in large cities and in small villages, they have become a symbol of the Christmas spirit.

The parol is an expression of faith and hope that spreads throughout the country and social classes. They are made of basic or recycled materials, homemade or bought in luxury stores. But both the simple and the more sophisticated designs represent light on darkness and the goodwill of families.

There are contests in all the towns to see who can make the best lantern, but it is in San Fernando (Pampanga) where the Lantern Festival has been held for more than 100 years. A multitude of artisans from all the islands gather there to present the best giant lantern design in the Philippines and some of them can reach 12 meters.
