PTI Europe Trade Commissioner Visits Cocoa Farmers in Morobe
📍 Lae, Morobe | 27-28th April, 2026

The Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show & Trade Expo 2026 did not finish in Wewak, but in Morobe for two (2) of the 15x international delegates that came for CoEX26 event.

We brought Jodie Stewart, Trade Commissioner of Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) Europe and Yann Gaitan from Valhorna, the biggest boutique chocolate manufacturer in France to Morobe.

Prior to CoEX26, we worked with them to explore opportunities to step up Papua New Guinea’s cocoa exports to Europe.

Throughout the 2 days in Morobe, we visited our factories and export facilities; farmers and cocoa gardens at Naromangki (Wampar, Huon Gulf) and Waritzian (Umi, Markham); and exchanged fruitful discussions on cocoa production and quality; sustainable trade; long standing connections; and many other things.

ROBUSTA COFFEE IN THE LOWLANDS OF PNG
📍 Nadzab, Lae, Morobe | 13th May, 2026

In PNG, the two main types of coffee are Arabica and Robusta. Almost 99% of coffee grown and sold here is Arabica and Robusta occupies only less than 1% of total annual production. Even our flagship "Erap Kofi" is Arabica, grown at high altitudes (>1000 MASL) in the foothills of the famous Sarawaget range, Morobe.

Robusta coffee has demand in world markets. In Vietnam, almost 90% of it is used in downstream processing, e.g. instant coffee and value added products. Technically, Robusta is the best material for downstream processing (scientists know this).

PNG has this potential and opportunity, with abundant land (fertile valleys across our country, like Markham all the way to Ramu, Bogia, Sepik, Central/Papuan, NGI region etc), manpower/labour, etc.

We are working with Coffee Industry Corporation Limited to help grow Robusta. In this short video, our officer talks about the project we have to deliver 200,000 Robusta coffee plantings (cuttings) to farmers in Morobe and Sepik, with first lot 15,000 plants to be distributed starting June 2026.

We were at the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS 2026) show and displayed our work that we do in coffee and cocoa with Cocoa Board of Papua New Guinea, Coffee Industry Corporation Limited and many other partners. We also wish to thank and acknowledge those that found time to visit us - farmers, school children and the public, not forgetting NARI Director General Dr Nelson Simbiken and your team at PNG National Agricultural Research Institute for the opportunity given to engage with the wider farming community.

THANKING ALL WHO SUPPORTED US IN COEX SHOW
📍 Wewak, East Sepik | 25th April, 2026

This week saw some 5000+ people from all over PNG visited Wewak to attend Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show & Trade Expo 2026. Over 100 cooperatives and grower groups from the Sepik put up booths. In addition, 15 international cocoa buyers and chocolate makers also attended. From over 380+ cocoa samples sent in from across PNG for judging, top 3 farmers (2x Milne Bay + 1x East Sepik) signed export contracts with specialty cocoa buyer Cocoa Lattitude, received microlot licenses from Cocoa Board of Papua New Guinea, and also got sponsorship worth K100,000 to attend international cocoa show (CHOCOA) in the Netherlands next year 2027.

All the above would not have been possible without support from so many people, like farmers, corporates, sponsors, organizers, support systems, security etc). In this post, we would like to acknowledge and thank everyone that supported, visited and interacted with us in one way or another. Bikpla tok tenkyu igo long yupla olgeta yet! Tenkyu Sepik. All good things must come to an end as we fly above the Markham valley back to base in Rainy Lae.

ERAP KOFI IN THE SEPIK

We received a lot of positive stories and feedback here during the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show & Trade Expo 2026. So many people visited us because they have heard about the work that we do in food and agriculture, and our products and services like our flagship Erap Coffee. We had two unexpected groups, one Indian (4 people) and another Filipino (8 people) - just to buy Erap Coffee. This one here is an Officer from Australian Defence Force (ADF), and she heard about Erap coffee too and bought a packet. Very encouraging indeed!

This buyer came from France, Europe. He buys cocoa from all over the world, and works with the biggest cocoa buying and chocolate manufacturing company there. Today, he visited our facilities to see our work and discuss what can be done here in the Sepik region, including market opportunities to trade cocoa.

Today we hosted Queen Emma Chocolates (Paradise Foods Ltd), and showed them our cocoa work that we are starting up here to serve the Sepik region. Since last year 2025, we have been supplying cocoa from Morobe to their factory, and hope that we can help Sepik farmers from here on. QEC/PFL is a local company, and produces cocoa products using cocoa from PNG.

COMBINATION SOLAR DRYER FOR COCOA
📍 Somare Stadium, Wewak, East Sepik | 22nd April, 2026

PNG cocoa is known to have more than 80% fine flavour status rating in the world of cocoa. To maintain (or improve) on this rating, we need to introduce and promote new technologies like combination solar dryers (CSD) across the entire country. All our cooperatives and grower groups and even individual farmers and fermentry owners must have CSDs to produce high quality cacao to meet specialty markets.

Wia Trade has designed (computer generated designs, models and specs available), fabricated and introduced a 120kg (2 dry bean bags) capacity CSD and displayed it at the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show & Trade Expo 2026 event in Wewak. Come talk to us to find out more.
