๐กDid you know that one of the ingredients found in the Skincare is Witch Hazel?
Thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, some research suggests that witch hazel could be useful in the treatment of acne.
โจWhat is witch hazel?
Witch hazel originates from the leaves and bark of Hamamelis virginiana, which is a type of shrub thatโs native to North America and Japan. Once harvested, itโs distilled to bring out the plantโs active chemical compounds.
Itโs been used for centuries by Native Americans as a remedy for a variety of skin ailments related to irritation and inflammation.
How does witch hazel help fight acne?
Acne is considered an inflammatory skin disorder.
Therefore, minimizing skin irritation or inflammation is key to successfully treating itโand witch hazel can help with this on a few different levels:
1. It sops up oil.
Witch hazelโs astringent properties have a drying affect, helping to remove excess oils from the skin.
Take note: A pimple begins as a clogged pore, often due to excess sebum (aka oil) production. In turn, using witch hazel to remove that oil from your face can possibly halt breakouts before they have a chance to set up shop.
2. It reduces acne-causing bacteria.
When your skin produces excess oil, bacteria (specifically P. acnes bacteria) thrive in it. This spurs inflammation in the clogged pore and before you know it, bam, you have a red, angry pimple. The tannins in witch hazel have antimicrobial properties, meaning they can help reduce bacteria growth on the skin, and in turn, potential breakouts.
3. It calms irritation.
Finally, the anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel may temporarily calm the appearance of red or blotchy skin by soothing the area and triggering your blood vessels to constrict so that your pores appear smaller less red.
