Preparing for El Niño

The Philippine Coordinating Unit of Fastenaktion is working closely with Agro-Eco Philippines, Filipino Farmers' Seed Network (FFSN), and Social Action Center Marbel, in anticipation to the El Niño which, according to PAGASA, might likely occur from October 2026 – January 2027.

A key component in the preparation will be the planting of drought-tolerant crops like root crops, native corn, and upland rice in the most vulnerable communities in Mindanao. This will be coupled by community-based trainings on . The assistance will also be extended even to those farming communities outside of the project areas of the three organizations. Joy Pelino of Fastenaktion met with the leaders of Agro-Eco Philippines and FFSN in Kidapawan City last July 29-31.

Planting climate-resilient crops and practicing crop diversification are proven effective strategies to reduce the impacts of an extreme weather event like El Niño. Members of Agro-Eco Philippines were not heavily affected when El Niño occurred in Mindanao in 2016, as compared to those conventional farmers, because they’ve planted root crops, diversified their farms, and exercised farmer-to-farmer mode of cooperation.

Disasters don’t just happen — they’re shaped by the systems around us. Risks grow when environmental, social, and governance factors are ignored.

1️⃣ Climate change
Rising temperatures are supercharging hazards — making floods, droughts, and storms more frequent, intense, and unpredictable.

2️⃣ Environmental degradation
When forests are cleared and wetlands drained, we lose nature’s first line of defence against floods, landslides, and coastal surges.

3️⃣ Poverty & inequality
Communities with fewer resources are often forced to live where hazards hit hardest – without safety nets, each disaster deepens inequality.

4️⃣ Poorly planned urban development
Rapid, unregulated growth leaves cities exposed – weak infrastructure and unsafe housing turn hazards into human catastrophes.

5️⃣ Weak governance
When coordination and accountability are missing, disaster prevention and response are ineffective.

💡 Tackling these drivers means tackling risk itself — building resilience that lasts.

BEDOPaRWA is now an Organic Certifying Body. Congratulations!

This means that BEDOParWA is now authorized to provide organic certification to its members, making the once expensive certification affordable and accessible to the small-scale farmers.

“The accreditation given to BEDOPaRWA proves that the small-scale farmers can really advance organic agriculture in the Philippines” says Nonito Rebusora Olimpo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Agro-Eco Philippines.

The increasing no. of accredited local organic certifying body, like BEDOParWA, can also increase the no. of organic agriculture practitioners. Practicing organic agriculture is a proven solution to reduce poverty and hunger among the farming communities in the Philippines.

Braulio E. Dujali Organic Producers and Rural Workers Association (BEDOPaRWA) is one of the very active members of Agro-Eco Philippines since 2018. It started with a humble beginning but achieved several milestones over the past 6 years because of its innovations and holistic approach to organic agriculture – actively engaging in seed conservation, crops diversification, marketing, advocacy on farmers’ rights, critical collaboration with the government, and working with other farmers’ organizations.

BEDOPaRWA truly deserved the accreditation. Padayon sa paglambo!

The Training on Triple Nexus Approach that we’ve attended last week in Ateneo de Manila University, during the National Partners’ Meeting of Fastenaktion, was so useful to further improve our programs.

The Triple Nexus Approach is commonly used by international organizations and United Nations (UN) Agencies in delivering humanitarian response, advancing sustainable development, and promoting food systems transformation. This approach is so applicable to Philippine situation and context, as we continue to endure climate change, disasters, environmental exploitations, social injustice and inequalities.

The Board of Trustees of Agro-Eco Philippines headed by Nonito Rebusora Olimpo, staff, and member farmers’ organizations (POs) are grateful to Fastenaktion for the continuing accompaniment.

The Certificate was given on June 23, 2026, during the National Partners’ Meeting of Fastenaktion held in Ateneo de Manila University.

It was a great honor to have received such Certificate from no less than Atty. Tony La Viña, Director of the Klima Center and former Dean of the School of Government of Ateneo de Manila University and Natasha Forte, the new Programme Officer of Fastenaktion in the Philippines.

We’re grateful and so motivated to be once again with the Philippine Partners of Fastenaktion, in another National Partners’ Meeting happening here at the Manila Observatory in Ateneo de Manila University from June 22-25, 2026.

Topics in this Year’s Partners’ Meeting include climate justice, energy crisis, reducing inequality, and food systems transformation. We’re thankful to Fastenaktion for continuously investing in activity like this – necessary to scale-up the projects of its partner CSOs – to make it very relevant in the face of global and national issues.

We welcome, Natacha Forte, the new Programme Officer for the Philippines.

We sincerely thank her predecessor, Helena Jeppense-Spuhler, for the many years she dedicated in advancing sustainable development and human rights in the Philippines.
