They’re learning the science of rice breeding – to develop locally-adapted, climate resilient, and good-eating quality varieties – necessary for Filipino farmers to adapt to and crisis. Seeds of Fulfillment

The smile on the face of John Raymund T. “Bobet” Jurada shows a strong sense of great fulfillment – for successfully developed climate resilient and good-eating quality rice varieties.

Bobet started with rice breeding when he was 12. His father, Arthur, taught him about the science and art of it. He proudly named his bred lines/varieties ‘JTJ’ which bears the initials of his full name. One of the varieties is JTJ-2, marketed by BUSAFO, an organization of organic farmers in Buayan, Mlang, Cotabato.

BUSAFO is a member of Agro-Eco Philippines and supported by Fastenaktion.

Bobet passionately shared his expertise in rice breeding to the young and adult farmers, in his capacity as a community leader and a member of the Board of Trustees of Filipino Farmers' Seed Network (FFSN), co-founded by Agro-Eco Philippines in 2018 to advance the rights of the farmers to save, develop, sell, and exchange seeds.

Agro-Eco Philippines co-founded the Filipino Farmers' Seed Network (FFSN) in 2018, during a National Seed Conference held at Ateneo de Davao University -- to advance the rights of the Filipino farmers to save, exchange and share seed.

Members of Agro-Eco Philippines have enough to eat despite the War in Iran

“Practicing agroecology – using own seeds, formulating own fertilizers, diversifying crops, and strengthening local food systems – is proven very effective and even promote resilience in a time like this” says Nonito Rebusora Olimpo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Agro-Eco Philippines.

Those farmers practicing conventional agriculture heavily felt the effects of the War in Iran, since synthetic fertilizers and the entire conventional food systems are heavily dependent on petroleum products.

"Building local food sovereignty is a long-term response to the increasing global crises. It helps communities remain stable despite external shocks and enables them to defend their right to a dignified livelihood” says Bembet Madrid, Coordinator of Fastenaktion in the Philippines.

Farmers in other countries where Fastenaktion is working also feel the same level of resilience.
