Baguio City ditches Waste-to-Energy incineration in favor of real Zero Waste solutions.
After initially pushing for incineration, Mayor Benjamin Magalong now champions waste segregation and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology as key pillars of the city’s Circular Economy Program—a direct result of persistent advocacy from communities and environmental defenders.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of waste workers, residents, and Zero Waste advocates for advocating alternatives. Congratulations to GAIA Asia Pacific members, Zero Waste Baguio, Inc., and Ecowaste Coalition, including independent and renowned scientist, Dr. Jorge Emmanuel for improving public discussions on the harms of WTE incinerators. After a few months, Baguio has cut its daily waste by 50 tons—reducing costs and keeping more trash out of landfills!
