🌾DA-INREC Dingras Station Holds OJT Culmination for ISPSC Students 🌱 by John Christopher Tumamao

DINGRAS, ILOCOS NORTE — The Department of Agriculture – Ilocos Norte Research and Experiment Center (DA-INREC) Dingras Station proudly celebrated the successful completion of a 240-hour internship program of nine (9) On-the-Job Training (OJT) students from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) during a culmination activity held recently.
From February 11 to March 24, 2026, the interns immersed themselves in real-world agricultural operations—transforming classroom knowledge into hands-on experience. Through a structured rotation of station activities, each student gained valuable exposure across various projects, ensuring well-rounded learning in both crop and livestock systems.
One of the most memorable and challenging experiences shared by the interns was their participation in livestock health monitoring—particularly performing blood sampling for the first time alongside experts from the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Despite coming from a crop science background, this opportunity broadened their skills and deepened their appreciation for integrated agriculture.
👏 The DA-INREC team commended the interns for their dedication, teamwork, and enthusiasm, encouraging them to carry these experiences forward as future leaders in agriculture.
💚 In return, ISPSC staff expressed their gratitude to DA-INREC personnel for their unwavering support, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing that made the internship truly meaningful.
🏅 As a highlight of the event, certificates of recognition were awarded to both DA-INREC mentors and OJT completers—celebrating a successful partnership in shaping the next generation of agriculturists.

The Department of Agriculture – Ilocos Norte Research and Experiment Center (DA-INREC) Dingras Station actively participated in the 23rd Ani Festival of the Municipality of Dingras from March 12 to 19, 2026, demonstrating its continued support for local initiatives that promote community engagement and development.

As part of the festival activities, DA-INREC Dingras Station set up a booth at the Agro-Industrial Commercial and Trade Fair, where it showcased various research outputs like products developed by the station. The exhibit highlighted innovative and value-added products that reflect the station’s efforts to support farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Employees of the station, under the leadership of Ms. Melinda G. Calumpit, Station Manager, also joined the National Government Agencies (NGA) and Non-Government Organizations (NGO) Day Parade, together with on-the-job trainees from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College. The group actively participated in the parade, proudly representing the station and sharing the festive spirit with the community.
The station’s participation reflects its strong support for the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Dingras, ensuring that agricultural services remain responsive to the needs of the community while aligning with national agricultural strategies.

February 25, 2026 Updates:

The project titled “Development of CGUARD Composite Population in Selected Regions,” established at DA–INREC, Dingras, Ilocos Norte, was visited by project staff from the Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines Los Baños. The team was headed by Ms. Maria Alma B. Sanchez, together with Mr. Ruel M. Ramos, Regional Focal Person for the CGUARD Project.

The visit aimed to lead the conduct of a structured selection procedure using stratified mass selection to improve the performance, uniformity, and adaptability of the composite population. This approach minimizes selection bias by preventing the over-representation of plants from a single portion of the field, thereby maintaining genetic diversity while enhancing the population mean.

As an output, ten (10) grids or strata were delineated to represent the entire field for the systematic identification of superior plants based on plant vigor, uniformity, healthy panicles, grain filling, resistance to pests and diseases, and the overall adaptation.

Look: INREC-Dingras welcomed the nine (9) Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College as they officially began their 240-hour On-the-Job Training on February 11, 2026.
With inspiring words from Director Fidel L. Libao, DA RFO I Regional Executive Director, who reminded them, “You are the future of our nation. Don't lose hope. Let's join hands in feeding our people,” the journey toward becoming future agriculturists has officially begun.
Ms. Melinda G. Calumpit, Station Manager, together with the INREC-Dingras staff, warmly welcomed the delegates and presented the center’s programs and initiatives, through which the students will gain hands-on experience.
Here’s to nurturing future professionals in agriculture and strengthening our commitment to food security.
