Someone Else’s Yardstick
All too often people allow themselves to be locked in a cage, not realizing that they hold the key to their freedom. When you rely on what everyone else thinks of you, you’re measuring your self-worth with someone else's yardstick. Trying to please those around you won’t bring you happiness. In fact, it will bring you down and you won’t even like the person you’ve become. The only way to escape this destructive cycle is to make a choice to stop allowing others to control you and give your life completely to God. You may not be able to change the people around you, but you can change the people who you choose to be around. If your friends are always making you feel bad about yourself, talk behind your back, or are nowhere to be found when you’re in trouble, then perhaps it’s time for new friends. Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down. The truth is, people make time for who they want to make time for. People text and reply to people they want to talk to. Never believe anyone who says they’re too busy. If they wanted to be around you, they would. And people who never seem to have time for you are not your true friends. Unlock the door of your cage by making Holy- Spirit-filled choices. Start by choosing godly friends who will lift you up, not tear you down, friends who will help you grow spiritually and who are honest and loyal. Make a commitment to be kind to yourself and not put yourself down. God wants to bless you beyond your wildest imagination. You deserve love and loyal relationships. Live a life of integrity and be the person God created you to be. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Live your best life by inviting Christ to live in your heart today and every day.
