We are proud to host the first group of on-the-job training (OJT) students from the BS Biology program of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), coordinated with the City Agriculturist Office of Iligan City. Their training focuses on hydroponics, a soil-less method of growing plants, with hands-on experience in cultivating lettuce from start to finish.
The students are involved in every stage of the process—from sterilizing growing mediums to planting seeds, observing germination, and transplanting seedlings into the main hydroponic system. This immersive approach allows them to gain a detailed understanding of how controlled environments support plant growth.
As they progress through the training, the students also identify and analyze key challenges faced in hydroponic systems. These include maintaining optimal water quality, managing environmental factors like temperature and humidity, preventing disease and algae growth, and ensuring consistent nutrient levels.
By directly engaging with these issues, they develop practical problem-solving skills and a deeper appreciation for sustainable agriculture. This experience helps connect their biological studies to real-world applications, preparing them for future roles in research, agritech, or environmental management. We value this partnership with City Agriculturist Office of Iligan City and look forward to contributing to the professional development of the next generation of science and agriculture professionals.
