In Germany, a new kind of vending machine is transforming how people shop for personal care items — by letting you refill your old shampoo bottles instead of buying new ones. These sleek, touch-operated stations are popping up in supermarkets, malls, and even transit hubs, offering liquid shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, and other essentials — all without the need for single-use plastic.

Here's how it works: you bring your empty container, scan it or select your product on the screen, and place the bottle under a nozzle. The machine then dispenses your chosen quantity, charging you by volume. Some even let you customize the scent or concentration. The experience is clean, fast, and eco-friendly.

This system tackles one of the biggest sources of household plastic waste — personal care packaging. By skipping the bottle and cap entirely, these refill vending machines reduce carbon emissions, plastic production, and landfill pressure. They're also cost-efficient, since you're only paying for the liquid, not the container or branding.

Germany, already a global leader in recycling and sustainability, is taking it a step further by shifting toward true circular use — keeping bottles in circulation instead of endlessly recycling or discarding them.
