Discover the Rich History of Coffee in Batangas- From humble beginnings to a cultural legacy, Batangas has been a proud home to one of the Philippines finest coffee regions.

• 1740: A Spanish Franciscan monk introduced the first coffee tree to Lipa, Batangas.
• 1860’s: Batangas coffee began to be sold to the United States through San Francisco.
• 1876: Barako coffee cultivation spread to the neighboring province of Cavite.
• 1880’s: The Philippines became one of the world’s top four coffee producers.
• 1889: Coffee rust spread to the Philippines, destroying most of the coffee trees in Batangas.
• 1980’s: The Philippines joined the International Coffee Organization, which helped to revitalize the industry.
• Today: Barako coffee is slowly disappearing from farms and markets, and is consumed mostly locally.

Philippines is one of the few nations that produces the four economically viable coffee varieties – Arabica, Liberica (Barako), Excelsa and Robusta. The Philippines is ideal for all four types due its climate and soils characteristics, which range from lowland to mountains areas.
