Paldo na naman sa dami ang mga alaga plus another forage pero bukas pa natin ibibigay sa kanila. Ang Mexican Sunflower or Wild sunflower locally known as Mamarait

Best Practices for Fresh Feeding

Wilt them first: Many experienced keepers recommend letting the fresh leaves wilt for a few hours or overnight before feeding. This reduces the moisture content, which helps prevent bloating and diarrhea.

Gradual Introduction: Start with a very small amount (one or two leaves) to see how your rabbitโ€™s stomach reacts.

Choose Young Leaves: The highest nutritional value is found in the vegetative stage (before the plant flowers). Avoid thick, woody stalks of mature plants as they are harder to digest.

Ensure Cleanliness: Only pick leaves from areas free of pesticides, herbicides, and heavy road pollution. Wash them thoroughly to remove dirt or parasites.

Why Feed it Fresh?

Nutrient Retention: Fresh leaves provide the highest levels of vitamins (A, C, and E) and natural hydration.

Palatability: Most rabbits find the fresh green leaves highly tasty.

Growth: Studies have shown that fresh Tithonia can be used effectively as a supplement or even a primary forage for growing rabbits without negatively affecting their weight gain.

Important Warning
Never feed only wild sunflower leaves. It must be a supplement to a diet that is at least 80% high-quality hay or dried grass. Overfeeding fresh greens can lead to a protein imbalance or digestive upset due to the plant's natural anti-nutrients (like tannins).

The wild sunflower in the Philippines, commonly known as Tithonia diversifolia or "marapait," is a non-native, robust perennial introduced from Mexico. It is an invasive species that thrives in highland areas, particularly Baguio City and the Cordillera region, blooming in vibrant yellow during the "ber" months (colder season). Good thing I found this forage while driving home to Tiaong from Tayabas City, Quezon.

Benefits for Rabbits

High Nutritional Value: It is rich in protein (12% to over 30% dry matter) and minerals like calcium.

Growth Support: Studies show it can be used as an alternative to expensive concentrates, supporting healthy weight gain and carcass quality in growing rabbits.

Medicinal Use: An aqueous extract of the leaves has been found to be as effective as ivermectin in treating scabies in rabbits when applied topically.

Key Precautions

Moderation is Crucial: While leaves and soft stems are safe, they should ideally be mixed with other grasses or legumes to ensure a balanced diet and avoid digestive upset.

Potential Toxicity: The plant contains secondary metabolites (like tannins and sesquiterpene lactones) that can be toxic in very high concentrations, potentially affecting the liver and kidneys of small mammals.

Processing: Air-drying or boiling the leaves for a few minutes before feeding can help reduce anti-nutritional factors and improve palatability.

Avoid the Seeds: Unlike common sunflowers, some reports suggest the seeds of this specific wild variety may be toxic and should be avoided.

Synedrella nodiflora (Cinderella w**d) is a safe, highly palatable, and nutritious forage for rabbits, often used as a sustainable, cost-effective green feed supplement to improve reproductive performance. It can be included in diets up to 50% without negative effects on meat quality or animal health.
Key Benefits and Uses:
Reproductive Performance: Studies indicate that feeding S. nodiflora leaves increases litter size, reduces kidding intervals, and lowers mortality rates from birth to weaning.
Nutritional Value: It is a good source of fiber, protein, and bioactive compounds like flavonoids and saponins.
Safety: It is considered a non-toxic, natural fodder for rabbits.
Management Tips:
Feeding: It can be used as a supplement to commercial concentrate feed.
Preparation: Ensure it is clean, rinsed, and well-drained to avoid issues with hygiene and moisture.
Usage: It can be used in up to 50% of the diet, particularly beneficial for growing rabbits and improving the fertility rate of does.
