The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) has convened an emergency meeting of its general council on Dec 27 to probe the participation of national player Ubaidullah Rajput in a private tournament in Bahrain, where he was seen wearing an Indian jersey and waving the Indian flag.

Videos and images of Ubaidullah, a prominent international kabaddi player, donning the Indian kit during the third GCC Kabaddi Cup, held on December 16 at the Gulf Air Club in Salmabad, went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism.

In a statement, PKF secretary Rana Sarwar condemned the incident, stating that the event was privately organised and that teams were named after countries such as India, Pakistan, Canada and Iran. He said the squads largely comprised players of their respective origins, with Indian players forming the ‘India’ side.

Sarwar revealed that 16 Pakistani players travelled to Bahrain and participated in the event without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the federation or the Pakistan Sports Board.

“No official Pakistan team was sent and no permission was granted,” he said, adding that action would also be taken against those who falsely represented a ‘Pakistan’ team at the tournament.

PKF chairman Chaudhry Shafay Hussain has ordered a thorough inquiry and promised strict disciplinary action against those found responsible.

Meanwhile, Ubaidullah issued a public apology on social media, claiming he was unaware that the private team he had been invited to join would be labelled as ‘India’.

He maintained that it was a local annual cup and not an official India-Pakistan contest, and said he only realised how the match was being portrayed after hearing slogans from the crowd.

In a video statement, Ubaidullah said he requested the commentator to clarify that the match was a club-level event rather than a bilateral contest. He said he would not have participated had he known it would be projected as an India-Pakistan fixture.

Responding to the backlash, including accusations of treason, Ubaidullah appealed to the public not to brand him a traitor, reiterating his apology to the federation and those whose sentiments were hurt.

The federation emphasised that while players from different countries often feature together in club events, representing another country and displaying its flag was unacceptable, particularly under the prevailing circumstances.

A domestic worker was allegedly beaten by a man in Karachi earlier this week, it emerged on Thursday.

According to a first information report filed at Gabol Town police station — dated December 13 and available with Dawn — the complainant stated that she was working as a cleaner at a private residence when she got into an argument with the suspect on December 10.

“On December 11, when I finished working at a house, the suspect came and started beating me as I was descending some stairs,” she alleged. “He pushed me down the stairs while verbally abusing me.”

The complainant further alleged that bystanders also beat her, leaving her with facial and internal injuries.

According to the FIR, the suspect who initially assaulted the complainant was booked under Sections 337A (punishment for assault), 354 (assault or criminal force to [a] woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).

After a video of the incident went viral, Sindh Minister for Women’s Development, Shahina Sher Ali, took stern notice of the incident and sought details from police, a statement from her office said.

“The provincial minister directed the police to conduct an immediate and transparent inquiry into the condemnable incident,” the statement read

“In the video, the accused is clearly subjecting the woman to the worst torture,” Sher Ali was quoted as saying. “Whatever the motives of the incident, physical violence against the woman will not be tolerated under any circumstances and the suspect should be arrested immediately and severely punished.”

Pakistan hockey team manager Anjum Saeed was allegedly removed from a flight while returning to the country after being accused of smoking on board, according to reports.

Geo News reported that the national hockey team was returning home from Argentina when their flight made a stopover at another airport for transit. During the stopover in Brazil, Anjum Saeed allegedly smoked after the aircraft had stopped.

According to Geo, the airline crew reported the incident to security officials. Following the complaint, security personnel offloaded Anjum Saeed from the aircraft due to strict enforcement of smoking regulations.

Reporters added that despite repeated requests from the entire squad, security officials did not reconsider their decision. As a result, the manager and one player were offloaded, while the rest of the team continued their journey back to Pakistan.

The national squad returned to Pakistan two days earlier, while Anjum Saeed and the player arrived back in the country late last night.

Security sources further claimed that Anjum Saeed was taken into custody and fined. It was also stated that influence was used, after which the matter was resolved with a fine.

Responding to the reports, Anjum Saeed denied that any such incident took place.

He said that no smoking incident occurred and clarified that he stayed back in Dubai along with one player due to work-related reasons.

Engineers at Karachi’s NED University successfully conducted test drive of the country’s first AI-powered driverless car, marking historic milestone in the nation’s automotive and technological landscape.

The successful trial, carried out on roads of the university campus, left students, faculty, and onlookers astonished as the car moved smoothly and autonomously, without any human intervention.

This groundbreaking project was initiated a year ago at NED University’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence, within the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. The team transformed an electric car imported from China into a fully autonomous vehicle using sophisticated integration of robotics, mapping, sensors, computer vision, and AI algorithms.

The autonomous system of the car currently operates at speeds ranging from 15 to 20 km/h, with fully programmed turning modes and real-time traffic judgment, allowing it to safely navigate the campus roads and avoid obstacles.

Experts at NED University emphasized that this project highlights Pakistan’s growing talent and innovation in science and technology, showing that local engineers can deliver breakthroughs that compete on a global scale.

The successful test drive not only demonstrates the technical prowess of Pakistani engineers but also signals the potential for the country to advance in the autonomous vehicle industry, which is rapidly shaping the future of transportation worldwide.

Pakistan, often hailed as a nation with immense scientific talent, now has yet another reason to be proud as its young engineers continue to push boundaries and achieve global recognition through innovations like this driverless car.

Member of National Assembly Syeda Amna Batool has been appointed to FIFA’s prestigious Institutional Reforms Committee, marking the country’s most significant milestone in the world of football.

Ministry of Information hailed the appointment as not just a sporting triumph but a major diplomatic success, signaling FIFA’s renewed confidence in Pakistan.

Under leadership of PM Shehbaz Sharif, the government’s commitment to promoting football has now gained international recognition, with Amna Batool set to represent Pakistan as a respected and influential voice in the global football arena.

This historic step cements Pakistan’s presence on the world stage and inspires hope for the future of sports in the nation.

FIFA oversees international competitions, sets the rules of the game, and promotes football worldwide. Pakistan, through its official body, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), has been affiliated with FIFA since 1948, but football in the country has faced challenges such as limited infrastructure, funding issues, and administrative disputes.

Islamabad focused on rebuilding its football profile, including promoting women’s football and engaging with international programs. The appointment of MNA Syeda Amna Batool to FIFA’s Institutional Reforms Committee marks historic milestone, signaling global recognition of Pakistan’s growing role in football governance and offering an opportunity to strengthen the sport both diplomatically and domestically.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have deported 24,000 and 6,000 Pakistani nationals, respectively, on charges of begging, the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told lawmakers.

The FIA chief also revealed that Azerbaijan has deported Pakistani citizens for similar offences, highlighting a growing trend of deportations linked to organized begging networks abroad.

However, the briefing did not include province-wise data of the deportees, which could have provided clearer insight into regional patterns and helped authorities design targeted preventive and rehabilitation measures.

The disclosures were made during a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Rights by the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency.

The FIA chief said Saudi Arabia alone deported 24,000 Pakistanis this year for begging. Dubai sent back 6,000 people, while Azerbaijan deported 2,500 on similar charges.

A case has been registered against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally of the Indian ruling party BJP, in Patna, for allegedly removing the veil of a Muslim woman doctor during an event.

According to Indian media reports, the case was filed by Samia Rana, a leader of the Samajwadi Party, in Lucknow. The incident has sparked controversy, leading to legal action against the chief minister.

Earlier, responding to a video circulating on social media Kumar pulling down Nusrat Parveen’s hijab during a government function, Aakar Patel, Chair of Board at Amnesty International India, said: “This act was an assault on this woman’s dignity, autonomy, and identity”.

“When a public official forcibly pulls down a woman’s hijab, it sends a message to the general public that this behavior is acceptable. No one has the right to police a woman’s faith or clothing,” he said.

“Such actions deepen fear, normalize discrimination, and erode the very foundations of equality and freedom of religion. This violation demands unequivocal condemnation and accountability. Urgent steps must be taken to ensure that no woman is subjected to such degrading treatment.”

The viral footage showed Bihar Nitish gesturing towards Nusrat Parveen’s headscarf before abruptly pulling it down. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who was standing behind him, appears to intervene and restrain the chief minister, while Health Minister Mangal Pandey and the Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary, Deepak Kumar, are seen laughing.
