Green Pakistan Initiative Forges Landmark Partnerships with Lucky Core Industries and Masna Corporation to Launch Transformative Cholistan Agroforestry Project
A New National Mission: Turning an Ancient Riverbed into a Modern Agroforestry Hub
ISLAMABAD, Thursday 22nd October 2025 – The Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) today announced the signing of two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with Lucky Core Industries Limited (LCI) and Masna Corporation, marking a significant leap forward in modernizing Pakistan's agricultural sector and launching the ambitious “Cholistan Agroforestry Initiative”.
The signing ceremony unveiled a comprehensive plan for the Cholistan Agroforestry Transformation, which will see the development of the first-ever "Agroforestry Knowledge Park" in the region. This initiative represents a paradigm shift from attempting to cultivate suitable crops to embracing a philosophy of "Right Tree, Right Crop, for the Right Soil and Water."
Director General of the Green Pakistan Initiative, Maj. Gen. Shahid Nazeer (Rtd), stated on this occasion: "Today's partnerships are a cornerstone in our national strategy for agricultural resilience and food security. The Cholistan initiative is more than a project; it is a testament to our commitment to turning challenged landscapes into productive assets. By combining our forces with industry leaders like Lucky Core Industries and Masna Corporation, we are mobilizing the technology, expertise, and strategic vision required to build a sustainable and prosperous green economy for the people of Cholistan and for Pakistan."
Speaking at the event, Mr. Muhammad Nadeem Iqbal, Advisor Strategic Projects, elaborated on the strategy: "The Cholistan Agroforestry Initiative is founded on a paradigm shift. We move away from trying to force unsuitable crops onto the land and instead embrace a philosophy of 'Right Tree, Right Crop, for the Right Soil and Water.' Our strategy leverages a powerful trifecta: Modern Science, Local Resilience, and Strategic Partnerships."
He detailed that this strategy involves deploying drought and salt-tolerant species, integrating high-value species into traditional pastoral systems to boost local livelihoods, and creating a collaborative ecosystem of global experts, agri-tech corporations, and the indigenous knowledge of the Cholistani people.
"This initiative will create a new green economy," Mr. Iqbal added. "It will transform farmers into entrepreneurs, reclaim degraded land, and build a resilient bio-economy based on high-value desert products. It is not merely an agricultural project; it is a national mission."
The MOUs with Lucky Core Industries and Masna Corporation formalize the strategic partnerships necessary to implement this vision. The parties share a common commitment to achieving national objectives of food self-reliance, reducing import dependence, and creating exportable surpluses to strengthen Pakistan's economy.
Key Areas of Collaboration:
The collaboration will focus on several critical areas to drive agricultural transformation:
Crop Development: Initial focus will be on high-value crops including sesame seeds, chillies, canola, cotton seeds, and sunflower.
Technical Assistance & R&D: LCI will provide comprehensive technical support, including high-yield seeds, and establish a state-of-the-art Research & Development Farm. This farm will serve as a center for optimizing crops, demonstrating advanced technologies, and training farmers.
Capacity Building: Large-scale workshops and training programs will be organized to disseminate knowledge on modern, mechanized, and sustainable farming practices to farmers and stakeholders.
Supply-Chain and Market Linkage: The partners will leverage their networks to create transparent market linkages and facilitate export opportunities for the produce, ensuring the initiative's commercial sustainability.
By establishing large-scale, replicable demonstration farms, the Cholistan Agroforestry Initiative is poised to turn historical challenges into a beacon of innovation and ecological restoration, setting a new standard for arid land development in Pakistan.
