How to make sure that my wolfberries are natural?
Today’s topic is on how to distinguish good quality wolfberries from low quality ones! 🌟 Wolfberry has a multitude of benefits such as anti-cancer and even anti-ageing. In this post we’ll talk about some common misconceptions about wolfberries, and how to avoid picking wolfberries that have been modified (typically with sulfur) to sell better.
1. A common mistake most make is to pick large wolfberries, when natural ones are smaller and flatter. Large wolfberries actually contain a lot of sugar and lack any medicinal benefits - they’re good only for nutritional purposes. About 95% and above of the larger wolfberries will actually contain traces of sulfur, so buy at your own risk!
2. In fact, the natural wolfberries have a duller colour, while altered ones have a brighter red colour.
3. Similarly, natural wolfberries have wrinklier skin whereas those with additives are smooth and glossier. This is because the natural ones lose more water via evaporation, and therefore aren’t as smooth. Black dots are also normal for natural wolfberries!
There is a simple test for this!😯 Soak a handful of wolfberries in warm water for 3 minutes and observe the colour of the water. You might expect the modified wolfberries to be the ones turning the water yellow, but it is in fact the opposite! Natural wolfberries have a natural colouring that will eventually turn the water yellow, while in modified wolfberries, the sulfur locks the colouring in, therefore the water will be either unchanged or be a very pale yellow.
