At Durian Haven, quality isn’t something we simply talk about — it’s something we actively work towards every season.
A big part of maintaining consistent quality comes from the farms and suppliers we choose to partner with.
Last month, we visited one of our suppliers’ plantations in Tangkak, Johor. One thing that immediately caught our attention was that every single durian tree was individually labelled.
Why is that important?
By tracking each tree individually, the farm is able to monitor the performance and fruit quality of every tree throughout the season. During harvest, they can identify which trees are producing the best fruits and prioritize those harvests for markets like Singapore where customers have higher expectations for quality.
The work doesn’t only happen during harvest. Throughout the growing season, the farm team regularly prunes the trees, inspects the fruits, and checks for issues such as burn seeds, abnormal growth, pest damage, or nutrient deficiencies. Any problems identified are addressed early to give the fruits the best chance of developing properly.
Many people think that because Malaysia produces so many durians, good durians are easy to find. The reality is that exceptional durians come from well-maintained trees, careful farming practices, and years of experience.
Of course, Mother Nature always has the final say. Weather conditions play a huge role in every harvest, and every season is different. That’s why we continue to work closely with our farmers and hope for favourable weather conditions to bring the best fruits possible to our customers.
Quality starts long before the durian reaches Singapore it starts at the farm
