Fine bone china is incredibly translucent, thin and elegant, yet it’s actually stronger than regular fine china. How is that possible? Because the clay is blended with around 40% bone ash. This unique composition gives it both delicacy and remarkable durability, allowing artisans to create pieces that are much thinner without compromising strength.

This technique dates back to 18th-century England, where it was developed to enhance both the beauty and resilience of porcelain.

Porcelain itself was invented in China over a thousand years ago, and the Chinese perfected high-quality ceramics long before Europe.

However, fine bone china specifically was not invented in China. It was developed later in England in the 18th century. Potters there experimented with adding bone ash to porcelain to make it:
• stronger
• more translucent
• easier to produce with local materials
