Tea
By 坤兴茶庄

In the modern Chinese Tea industry, the teas are classified according to their level of fermentation to guide discussion and production. The six generic groups in ascending order of fermentation are green (绿), white (白),yellow (黄),blue (青),red (红),black (黑) teas. In the past, (青) was used in reference to the colour blue, such as (青天, blue sky) and (靛青, indigo pigment) and is now used as the identity of the Wu Long (乌龙) teas.

Our Specialty Chinese Tea were carefully curated with our supplier in China, to deliver the best quality "white" and "blue" tea from the mountains of Wu Yi (武夷山)and An Xi (安溪), which are the heartlands of Fujian province(福建).

The teas originated from the pristine highlands and were handpicked with the utmost care to retain the natural fragrance and processed through roasting and fermentation to enhance the flavours of the various teas. The end products are high quality tea leaves that connoisseurs prize to brew a refreshing and invigorating pot of tea.

Specialty Coffee

Our specialty coffees are sourced from Africa, South America and Asia. These are mainly Arabica varietals with sweeter taste, lower astringency and a wide spectrum of flavours, such as nutty, berries and citrus notes. These coffees can be brewed using the pour over method, pulled as an expresso or made into a cold brew.

Nanyang Coffee
This is a roast that is unique to Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. From the late 18th to early 20th century, the Europeans brought coffee to their colonies in Southeast Asia and planted them as cash crop, to be exported to Europe to fuel the increasing demand for coffee.

The high quality beans were exported to Europe, while the lower quality beans were sold for local consumption. To compensate for the poorer quality, the local roasters cleverly added margarine, cane sugar or corn grits to the coffee beans and subjected the mix to an extremely dark roast. The dark roast caramelised the margarine, sugar and corn and in combination with the coffee beans' natural oils, created an extremely aromatic and full bodied coffee. The harsher tasting Robusta beans became more mellow, while the Arabica beans retained their smooth taste and are both infused with strong chocolatey and nutty flavours, with a signature invigorating aroma.

Our Nanyang Coffee is roasted with pure Arabica beans and can be enjoyed as a pour over, brewed in the traditional "sock" filter method or even as a cold brew without added sugar.

Our Story

How It All Started
In the 1930s, my grandfather Koh Eng Chuan 许应泉, migrated from Teochew China to Singapore in search of a better life for his family, as China then was in political turmoil and had limited resources necessary to maintain a massive growing population. Landing in Singapore, my grandfather gained a foothold at Garden Street with a provision shop Chop Khoon Heng 坤兴号, selling tea, sundry goods and dried foodstuff. (Garden Street no longer exists, and used to be located at the junction of Beach Road, Tan Quee Lan Street and Rochor Road.)

The business grew, but was suspended by the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945.

After the Japanese surrender in 1945, my grandfather set up another company Tai Seng 大成 , which focused on the roasting of coffee beans and the sale of coffee powder. Thereafter in the 1950s, he sold his shares in the coffee company and focused on the grocery and entrepot trading with Indonesia.

In continuing with my grandfather's legacy, WIDE AWAKE was incorporated as a modern online business to promote carefully curated Chinese Specialty Tea, Nanyang coffee and the various specialty coffees to both connoisseurs and enthusiasts.
